Re: RCH\'s Place

I like the shop. We are building a 24 X 32 similar to that. My friends talked me into using gambrial trusses, theyre sitting under quite a lot of snow right now. I have never used trusses before and wonder how I'll feel about the roof when I start shingles (boy i'm glad my wife is'nt scared of hights). Did you build your shop or hire out?

Ray (and Cy) -

My gawd, some of you folks have the most picturesque landscapes and buildings I have ever seen. Simply beautiful. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I'm still unclear about what all that white stuff is /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif, but it sure makes for a pretty picture.

That shop is too small? /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif It looks bigger than my first house. Is that where your tractor lives? For that matter, is that where Cy lives? /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Thanks for sharing, and thanks, Cy, for helping Dad out with Photoshop.

Re: RCH\'s Place

W-pizza, 24 x32 is the size. The gambrel roof gives a 2d story thats about 85 % of the 1st floor (the long wall is crowded with the trusses, there is a 7' ceiling with another 5 1/2' to the roof. The contractor built the shop first, then the house, all within 4 months. The single door you see on the end is 8' wide and 9' high; the double door behind the van was suppose to be 8'high x 16' but he screwed up with the headers and I ended up with 7' high partly because the plans weren't clear- I wont make that mistake again !
One thing about a building that is financed by a bank, the construction loan is usually at a higher rate than the mortgage and it behooves you to shorten the time it takes to actually construct the building(s). There is a long thread on CTB starting 12-30-00called " New Barn" that has a lot of ideas for a shop, some of which I'd incorporate in a shop that would substantially change what I did. http://jplan.com/cgi-bin/tractor/fullThreadnh.pl?parentnum=22933

Re: RCH\'s Place

Ray, Great looking homestead.
Which one of those tanks were diesel.
Your work shop to small /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gifthat could be a 3 or 4 family home.

Looks like you have alot of sq footage for living, and I'm glad I don't have to paint or wash your windows. [smiles]

I guess you get plenty of seat time mowing etc...

Nice place.

Re: RCH\'s Place

The house is 3000 sq. ft., 4 bedrooms ( we have 4 kids). All of this is in the middle of 61 acres that is being reforested. The shop is getting consumed by storage, especially in the winter.

Ray, if it's all tractor-related stuff, things could be worse. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Re: RCH\'s Place

The pole barn we built is 24' x 32' and only one story. Seemed huge when building it and more than big enough when it was finished. Now, with a cramped workshop area, a pop-up camper, tractors and related stuff, a bunch of lawn & patio furniture.......you get the idea. I've been considering building on a 10' x 32' lean-to on one side to store the camper and outdoor furniture, just so I can walk around inside the barn. They seem to get real small real quick. I kept promoting a larger building at the time of construction, but the superintendent of building and funding (a.k.a. wife) firmly over-ruled that option as she had other plans for the money that would have paid for the larger barn (pay for kids in college, that kind of stuff). Oh well, I maybe I can play with hammers and power tools next summer.

I've even looked into a steel tube framed temporary shelter. Have seen them at Sam's Club for under $200. Uses a plastic tarp for the roof and plastic tarps for the sides. At least I could store the camper, furniture, and other summer type things in it during the winter and take it down in the spring.

Anyone ever use one of these structures? Wondering how they handle the snow loads with the plastic tarp roof.

Re: RCH\'s Place

My kubota 2910 lives in one of the Costco pipe frame shelters. It has survived the first part of a Montana winter without damage. I did bend on of the frame members with the FEL. You got to be careful. I was able to repair it and the system seems to be working. I am hoping for two years worth of service until I can get a pole barn built.
