Re-refined Oil

I may be mis-remembering but adjacent to the Richmond (SF Bay) refineries there were short levees around pools of motor oil on the tidal mudflats that were the 'processing' to reclaim used oil. I recall as a kid going by there when US40 (now superseded by I-80 at higher elevation) went right along the shore, and my Dad explained that the black mudflat pools were settling ponds before that used oil went as input to the refineries.

Grand Auto! People think the original Harbor Freight marked the low point in quality of tools. Grand Auto was several steps lower. I had a radiator hose from there burst after a few months. Never did buy their pretend tools.

I waited for their special loss leaders of name brand oil and antifreeze.

I also bought several of their overhaul kits for Ford 289-302 motors.

Once the store refused to let me buy 2 cases of motor oil... I said no where does it say limit except to stock on hand and they had dozens.

Call the district attorney for a consumer fraud form.

Went back to buy and manager again said no...

My response is our you sure?

When manager didn't budge I pulled out the complaint form and asked him to spell his name slowly... I got my oil!

What's so bad about those 2 brands? I've never had any issues with either one.

Back when I was in my teens, Gulf Sapphire was the el cheapo recycled oil brand you'd see in the auto dept of department stores. At some point it was re-branded to remove the Gulf from the name. Haven't seen it in decades. I will confess to having used it a few times in some of the clunkers I drove when I was in school.

Years ago there was a old guy with a very old truck that picked up junk…

I had just changed my oil at 2500 miles and he asked if he could have it… he said his truck used about a quart a week!

Saw him for years and then never again. He mostly picked up any kind of metal for free.

There’s a pretty good sized oil refiner near Stratford Wi, they are very well known for quality products. I have seen their products for sale in lots of Truckstops . I haven’t used any of their stuff myself but have several friends that swear by the stuff.

When I was a kid (long time ago), I used 'Quacker' State motor oil but when I discovered that it sludged up overheads, I quit using it and switch to Pennzoil. With the advent of modern synthetic multi grade oils, all I use now and of course my Nano-Borate additive that I use in everything.

When I was a kid we all called the re-refined oil, 'resqueezed'.

Far as using it in a chainsaw for bar lubricant, never did because bar oil needs to be tacky to work. Never put any motor oil in the bar oil tank, even today.

Made that mistake once while trying to be cheap. As you noted, didn't lubricate very well, and it didn't take long for the suspended gunk in it to plug the passageways in the saw. PITA getting it all cleaned out. Lesson learned.

The best use for old oil is mixing with diesel for burn pile starter fuel, or coating wood field fence posts.

Actually my 'best' use is in my Kleen-Burn waste oil furnace in the shop. Problem is, I never seem to have enough for the entire winter, I always run out (I'm out now actually) and have to rely on my in floor PEX system to heat the shop. One thin about the Kleen Burn is it burns waste oil, brake fluid and dirty solvents as well. It has it's own built in centrifugal strainer's as well.

I much prefer the waste oil furnace over the in floor PEX because I use propane to heat fluid in the system and propane isn't a cheap date, especially now. I always shoot for filling my bottle (I own 3, 500 gallon bottles) in the summer when typically the propane is cheaper.

Try as I may (I change the oil in the buggies and tractors at less than half the recommended intervals), but it's never enough for the entire cold season.
