ok,
after a big project in june,
replacing septic tank, and having small pond
put in, now we had to go and have the
leach field put in. seems what was there,
wasn't much!
anyway, i borrowed a tractor and harley rake,
and have been over the ground a few times.
we have very rocky soil, which at first looks like
great gravel, but it is nestled in a lot of clay also,
and it is quite tight. (hardly any perk :( )

so, after this last pass with the harley rake, i have
several areas that are not fluffed up and "ideal" for
seed, but somewhat hard packed, and almost shaved
clean.
my question, is how good will the seed come in if
i seed it down the way it is?
if the answer is, "not good", then should I run this harley
rake deeper, and risk bringing up a ton more stones?
(no, there's not a good topping of topsoil to work with in some
places.)

here's some pictures:

the whole album is here, including some of the pond pics and
previous grass planting, which actually came in great!

If you can get a loose topping about 3" deep with the rake, do it. But otherwise grass will still grow. The trick is to cover it and keep it wet. Once the seed is down, pull a drag over it to cover the seed with dirt, roll it (if you can, but not necessary), and then cover it with straw. After that, water it every day (if that's possible) until the grass grows.

I mixed dutch white clover with my grass when I redid my backyard. It will come in quick (without water) and grows in everything. So if nothing else, you'll have something growing to ease erosion until the grass comes in 6 weeks later...

Dutch445 - make sure you move the tractor before you seed - else it will be blocked in - and you will be sad! :D

Rolling land there in NY - I'd guess you are nearer to Syracuse than Rochester... I don't have a really good reason for that guess - just a "feeling"...
