Like TripleR said go with filled tires or wheel weights. Personally I go with the
filled tires, you'll get more weight on the rear that way. I sure be tempted to
try a couple more dealers around there. That is rather odd the they came up
the same. I wouldn't be surprised if the area dealers have gotten together to
keep the prices the same. I know they do that around here with gas prices.

Unless you really like mowing, I would rethink that 72" mower. If it were me I would be thinking a 10 footer at a minimum, and that would mean a bigger tractor. But that might just be me, I don't have the time to mow all day long very often.

We had a series of problems, AC went out then the door glass broke out and finally bent a rim on on our 80 HP Case we use to pull our Woods DS1260 ten foot six inch mower. Our other tractor that will pull it is at another location and out truck was being used so we couldn't go get the other tractor. I drove my L5030 up there with a six foot mower; man I missed that ten foot unit.

I am retired, like driving a tractor, but there is a limit. The flip side is, I CAN mow everything with a six foot, but my big tractor and ten foot WON'T fit in some places. Sometimes you just have to compromise in one area or another.

OR buy more tractors:thumbsup:

I would love to get a bigger tractor. My problem is I have to store it in a regular garage and the 3940 with the rops folded just makes it under the door. I was looking at the specs on the L4240 and it will fit also. I think that will pull a 7 footer maybe even an 8 footer. Plus that one comes with a LA854 loader. Next time I'll check the price on that one too.

The only reason I did not go bigger than the L3940 is because that is the largest tractor you can mount the MMM on, a 72" model. I will probaly never do that now, but who knows. Sometimes I wished I has gone to the larger L4240 (same frame as L3940) or L4740. Philip.

I have a 3540 & use a landpride 1860 rotary cutter. Its a really good match with approximately 5.5 hp dedicated to each foot.

Just another note of info, the L3940 has better hyd. gpm figures than the L3540. Actually by Kubota's spec sheet - it is as good as most of the larger L's. I kinda wonder if that is another spec sheet error - seems like the L4240 up would be better having a larger/more capable loader.

I just received a price from Brady Barlow that is really very good on a L4240hst. Almost certainly I will be going this route; however, there is a L4240hst-1, -2 and -3 model. According to Kubota's spec sheet the -2 is 2.9 inches lower in height. Height is critical to me because I have to store it in a garage and when I measured a 3940 I only had about 1.5 inches of clearance with the rops folded. I am not sure if it was a -1, -2 or -3. There are other differences too such as the -3 has a swivel seat. I asked a local dealer what the differences are and he said it was the tier motor in the tractor and there was no way of knowing which one he would get when ordering a tractor. That doesn't sound right to me. Another local dealer said there is no difference but the spec sheet says differently. Any differences that I should know about? Will the prices be different? Thanks guys

I'm in the middle of buying a 4240 right now.

From what various dealers told me (I think I've got this correct) the -2 models weren't around very long and finding one could be a challenge. The -1 models would be what a dealer may have if he doesn't sell a lot of them may have in stock. The bigger dealers most likely will have the -3. Brady at Barlows said finding a -1 could be done but may take some time.

From what I understand there's not too much different, the seat swivels and the PTO lever is different (electric vs cable I think). As far as height or the engine I hadn't heard a thing. I've never looked but the 4240 may be a taller tractor since it's the smallest of the bigger GLs that have the 854 loader.

The best thing would be to go to a dealer with a tape measure or ask those here who have on to measure it for you.

The -1, -2 or -3 versions of a particular model probably don't have major chassis/drivetrain differences that would change the dimensions of a particular model. So a 3940-1 is probably the same size as a 3940-3, etc. But the 4240 is a bigger tractor than the 3940. Bigger engine, different front axle, etc., so the dimensions get bigger. It could also vary depending on which tires you choose. If you have height limitations where you plan to keep it, it's probably best to get an actual, exact measurement from that specific model before taking delivery. Don't ask me how I came to know this :D
