Why would you need to change the air in the tires?

There was a competition in the UK a while back where a tractor magazine was asking for people to submit their oldest tires still holding air.
The winner was someone who had owned a grey fergy since new for use on his garden. He didn't ever remember changing the tires and apart from topping the tires up occasionally, the tractor still had 50 something year old air in the tires!
