Foxes and possums are two animals that lower tick numbers in an area. Mice carry lyme disease, ticks feed on the blood of mice, ticks become infected with lyme disease, pass it on to other animals. Foxes feed primarily on small rodents. More foxes=fewer mice=less incidence of lyme disease.

Possum feed directly on ticks, a lot of them. Did You Know That Opossums Eat Virtually All the Ticks in Your Yard?

Lesson: Don't shoot foxes or possum if you want to keep the incidence of lyme down in your area.
I did know that about possums. Even an old guy can learn something new.

We use both the Sawyer Premium 20% Picaridin Insect Repellent & the Sawyer Permethrin Insect Repellent for Clothing with good results. I also spray our immediate yard area & our garden area with CedarCide (cedar oil spray) & it has made a big difference in those areas. If we are in the woods or working in the driveway we use a combination of the Sawyer products & CedarCide products on ourselves & the dogs (CedarCide is pet friendly). We unfortunately live in the state Lyme got it's name from; and due to Lyme (& the other co-infections) not being found / correctly diagnosed my wife has been suffering for 12+ years with permanent neurological complication to the point that we need a transport chair to get her around on a regular basis....this is someone that ran her own physically demanding company, worked out 5 days a week & then walked the dogs a mile plus when she got home & now cannot alway finish a complete thought in a sentence. She is currently only in her mid 40's & for years we were told it was multiple other things (I won't go into that)... even that she might need psychiatric help because there was nothing wrong with her (I could write a book on her story & false diagnosis). Insurance companies will not cover the things that actually help & will deny the ongoing issues of Lyme... (I won't get into the financials)

Really Ticked... doesn't even come close to were I am.... I watch as it takes the most compassionate person & most important thing in my entire life away from this world everyday....

There is a ton of good info in the thread.... Do as much as you can to stop Tick infestation in your area & be diligent in preventing an issue... if you think there is an issue push (& push hard) for an answer.

Sorry... off my soapbox now...

So sorry for the suffering of your wife and family...

As humans it takes a bit of luck in life and too many have more than their share of unfortunate circumstances.

I continue to learn through member post here at TBN.

It seems the doctors for some reason have trouble or do not want to diagnose Lyme. I have heard similar stories to your wife’s though the effects were not as bad.
I pray your wife’s condition improves. It seems she is blessed to have a supportive family.

Our dogs need protection from ticks, same as we do to keep them from catching X,Y,Z diseases. I hope this is just common sense. We do the Nexgarud thing on them. Spelling?

Lordy - do I HATE spider bites. They take so very long to heal and all the while they "drool". And itch!!!

I apply Hydrocortisone cream and Caladryl lotion. Cuts the itch//helps the healing.

We have Wood Ticks here. Even though loads of deer - no Deer Ticks.

Dog tick - Wood tick are the same little beastie. Can carry Rocky MT Spotted Fever.

Where do all these ticks come from, when I was a kid (many years ago ) we did not have them around here now they are everywhere.
I visited the same fishing stream each April for about 60 years. Near Bishop, CA, which is high desert. Starting about 25 years ago, we noticed a tick now and then. As of about 10 years ago we noticed them a lot. Now we engage in tick prevention a lot where before we never encountered them at all.

Same thing in Northern CA. There are more ticks than ever. One species is very prevalent in spring, a different species in fall.

I can't explain the increase, except for a while some people were free ranging cattle near the stream. But those cattle have been gone for 20 years.
