I currently have a 5ft. "Bush Hog" rear blade for my Sub-Cut and while it does a fair job leveling dirt, etc., it just dosen't seem to have the weight to level gravel....doe's anyone out there use a heavier rear blade on their sub-cut and do you like it ...what brand....cost????

Rosey,

I used to use a rear blade, then I bought a "York" rake. A landscape rake is much better IMO than a rear blade in any earth moving or driveway maintaining comparisons I can make, aside from backfilling a trench. The blades are good for scraping a driveway of ice and light snow too. -Rent a rake and see for yourself.

What does it do, ride up on top of the gravel?
I have a Woods 7 ft blade and used to have a Woods 6 ft blade on another tractor. I never had any problem pushing or pulling gravel (1B and 2B) and I think they are the light or med duty blades.
Maybe you could try playing with the toplink to see if changing the angle of attack helps, or set a few blocks on it somehow, maybe on the stand rod if it has one.
I'm not sure why it wouldn't level gravel /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Put some weight on it. Adjust the top link so the blade cuts rather than drags.

It's not the best picture, but I had a local welding shop weld a simple post setup that would accomodate 25 lb. weights. It's worked great!

That's a good setup. There are many times one needs a little more weight with a blade.
I think the others are correct, orignal poster needs to angle the blade properly with the top link to move the gravel. Just experiment changing the top link until you get what you need, and then add weight as needed. John

I have to agree... must be angle related.

I had to add gage wheels to my cheap KK back blade before it became really useful for my needs. Kept digging in too much...and this is a light weight blade.

Adding weight sure can't hurt, but blade angle just may be more important...

I too agree with the adjustment of the blade angle with toplink. What the weights have come in really handy for is clearing snow (in reverse) so I don't tear up the gravel drive.

I got a LandPride rake with a flip-down blade. Works very good on my gravel driveway, but what really made a big difference was the addition of gauge wheels. The wheels enable me to get a smooth surface, and avoid the "washboard" effect.

Thanks for posting that picture! I have need for adding weight to a disc, and didn't have a good plan. I also have several old weight sets (since I'm too old and decrepid to use them as they were intended). Now I have a plan!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And with the weights on the disc, the Mrs. will quit harping on me to USE them! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
