case 580b
I have a mid 70's case 580 b ck. Today while moving some heavy wet sand, i hear a pop come from the left side rear. At this point i lost drive in that wheel?nd brakes. The only way I was able to limp my way home was to use the plunger pedal which I use when I get wheel slip and lose traction. I am no mechanic, so forgive me with the terminology I'm using. Can someone tell me what I broke from the description I gave.

Thanks

Here is an update. It's the differential lock pedal that I was pressing when i was getting wheel slip. The manual I have said make sure rear wheels are not spinning when depressing the diff pedal. I was also probably pressing the clutch / brake pedal at the same time which is also a no no… so this makes sense that I have no brakes…. I'm thinking I did some serious damage in the gear box ...

Could be anything from a broken axle, to items back to the bull pinion shaft. Here is a link to Case Construction parts to the 580B power train assy's. Official Case Construction Equipment Online Parts Store and Parts Look Up. Parts for Case Equipment and Construction Equipment. Parts Store for Case Wheel Loaders, Case Excavators, Case Skid Steers, Case Original Parts. Click on power train, and it will open to the different components.

Did you try feathering the left brake to try and make it move..?? If the bull pinion shaft is still intact, I'm thinking applying the left brake should make it power out to the right side. You may want to try that, and if it moves, you may have snapped an axle. Even at that, you'll need to remove the top off the diffy, to get to the nut on the end of the axle to remove it.

While you're at it, you may want to take a look at the differential lock. IIRC, they are made of aluminum, or pot metal, and I think the purpose was to be the weak link, but seldom is... I had a buddy let some younger guys plow with his JD 4020 while he took a break for supper. He was gone 45 minutes, and the boy managed to tear the ring & pinion out, doing the same thing.

Hope you have a service manual, I do believe you're going to need it.

If it's an OEM manual like the one for my 480C, they are very descriptive, and take you though step by step. If you got the place, and the tools to work on it, go for it...

I have a parts catalog that is like two telephone books?really helpful?ut I do not have a service manual. I have the room…the tools I don't have I will buy or borrow…can you tell me where you got your service manual? I'm thinking I'll need one for this fix.

Thanks

I got mine off epay, apparently when someone wasn't looking, or needing one. I just checked, and there are 3 hard copy's, but are @ $189.00 (ouch..) However, there are several on CD for $10.00 to $16.00. Never used one of those, so have no idea of the quality.

Most everything I've worked on, on my 480C, a standard mechanics set of tools did the job. Although the impact wrench, and small butterfly air wrench sped up tear down. I'm guessing the axle nut, if it needs removed may be the largest socket needed, and something in a 3/4 set will be needed. Plus a torque wrench to put it back together.

ok...I ordered a manual online... should have it in a few days...Last night I was able to get the machine up on the cement pad back by my garage, so it's in a good spot right next to the tools. I was able to move it by pressing down on the differential lock and using the right tire to get traction. The brakes for the right tire also work. However I have no braking ability for the main drive tire and she does not spin. I should clarify that. it spins kinda goes a little in the same direction as the other wheel when I have the outriggers down and the tires in the air, but nothing that would move the tractor.I think I'm starting to understand how the rear axle and differential work... I got a buddy at work that is a master mechanic that said he'll help...I'm thinking I want to tackle myself though...Thanks for the help DJ54...I'll let you know how it goes.

Does it just have a ROPS, or complete cab..?? Mine has a ROPS... I removed the right fender, tire & wheel from the side I needed to get into, and removed the floor panel(s). Held that side of the ROPS up with a chain hoist, plus an extra chain up to the I-beam across the shop as a double safety. Makes it so much easier to get to what you need to work on.

I didn't need to pull the top off the diffy though. Just reworking the brake assy's, and replaced the lines. Just made it a whole lot easier for a guy my age & size...

Do take some pics along the way, we LOVE pics..!! And sometimes help when going back together, LOL...

Best of luck..!!
