The rear tire bolts are 27mm lubricated and I believe class 8.8. According to fastenal engineering chart that would mean I need to tighten the bolts to 597 ft-lbs. According to a different chart i found it states 700lb-ft. So that's a lot of pressure, more than twice what my 1/2 torque wrench will do. I still want to find the correct number in NH documentation however I don't think I want to buy a wrench that can actually do that, its hundreds of dollars.

I have a Harbor freight in town - he means cheap tools - they sell a Pittsburgh 3/4 torque that can do 300ft-lbs for $79.00

So I am guessing that most operators just tighten up the tires, get to work and skip the 1000 ft-lbs torque wrench

You can install bolts by snugging the bolt with regular wrench and then rotating bolts an additional half turn from the snug position

Ranger, wait a minute....you do realize all of those torque charts are referring to the actual bolt diameter, not the socket size used to remove them...right? Got me worried or am I the one that's confused?

He know the socket size 24 and 27 millimeters. He is questioning the torque values. I think the chart he posted gives the maximum torque for the bolt. He is saying he was provided a torque of 597 ft pounds. I have never seen a wheel lug bolt or nut with that high a torque requirement.

A reference out of Machinery's Handbook is attached. Socket size has no bearing on the amount of torque the stud will withstand.
You can't have a 27mm threaded bolt with a 27mm hex head bolt. It would look like a piece of all thread with 6 little nubs. Certainly useless for holding wheels on.
Im say'en he has a 16 mm bolts on the rear tires that use a 27mm socket which would call for 140~175 ft. lbs of torque or whatever the chart says and 14mm dia. on the front which would use a 24 mm socket.
All one has to do is measure the diameter of the bolt. 16mm is only a hair over 5/8" and 14mm is only 2 hairs under 9/16". 27mm is a beast of a bolt 1 1/16" diameter. :) H.D. Metric bolts.jpeg

Pretty much, yes. What did you use to remove the bolts? Whatever it was, that should be sufficient to install the bolts as well.

If you're worried, check the tightness again after an hour or two of operating, and again after 20 or so hours.

For the record, I have TD5050 as well. I used an impact to remove and replace my rear tires when it was needed. That was last year and no issues so far.

Old Tink - I understand - bolt size not socket size - I finally understand! Ok now I need to some way of measuring the metric bolt size - I might have one of those bolt size charts somewhere...

F3506 - I mostly used the impact wrench to take them off but I did check a few with the torque just to see how tight....they were all over the place ...some at 250 some a lot less.

F3506 - how do you like your TD5050? I have been getting to know mine and I like the power but also been finding the "problems" that came with the used tractor:

Like pouring 12 gallons of hydro fluid through a 13mm "socket size bolt/drip stick".
I have had two flats last week due a plugged rear tire leaking and a front tire that had a tube both I didn't know about. Air seat had a flat and I had the dealer replace a faulty switch. Rear hydro connector that leaks when connected to a hydro line, might be a bad o-ring. That's it so far.

Give you an idea of required torque on wheel nuts. My Kubota M6040 with 9.5 x 24(front) and 16.9 x 28(rear) lists the following torque values.

For inner "hub nuts" both front & rear- 190 to 225 foot pounds.......outer "rim nuts" front - 180 foot pounds, rear 190 to 225 foot pounds.

The idiot that told you 600 foot pounds must have sh*t for brains. I just use a standard torque wrench with 14" extension. Its a 2009 Kubota and the nuts have never loosened after my initial 20 hour check & tighten program.

BTW - couple years ago I put blue Loktite on all the wheel nuts just as an added safety precaution.

Ranger...I realize everybody does not have access to micrometers or vernier calipers to get accurate measurements of threads and pitch gauges etc, etc. BUT. you can get close enough to at least take an educated, in the field, wild a_s guess.
With the open end of metric wrenches! Yes, they are going to be bigger than what's stamped on the wrench, a 12mm wrench will measure something like 12.07mm, 14mm wrench will measure something on the order of 14.1mm and a 16mm open end wrench will actually measure something like 16.2.
Notice the trend? as the wrench size goes up so does the "slop" if you want to call it that for what we're doing.....BUT you can get close enough to take an educated guess as to the actual bolt size.
Keep an eye on flee-bay for a vernier caliper. It will come in handy over the years for a multitude of things foreign and domestic.
Best of luck and I admire your determination!
