Rear wheels binding

Fireman, if Hoye or Leonard can't locate that R&P then possibly this guy out in Ernie's old neighborhood might have a lead on additional salvage tractors. He doesn't have a FX265 but he might know someone else in the business. He did right by me for an axle housing last year, fair price and shipped soon. Or maybe this information can help someone else.

Ernie, does that sound like enough stress to tear teeth out of the R&P?

Is this a common problem for the FX generation?

I wonder if Fireman was sold a tractor that had broken teeth glued back temporarily with JB Weld or something. I don't see how a trailer deck could give enough traction to destroy that.

Cal, it happens a lot to the FX models. What happens is, the operator shifts either forward or reverse while the tractor is mowing in the opposite direction which creates a great amount of stress on the R&P and whamo they crack or break off a tooth.
Early on I was warned against doing that by my supplier in Japan, so I always stopped to shift from forward to reverse and never had a problem.
But there are folks out there that get in a hurry, and it kept us in business for a long time repairing them.

So is there a way to diagnose this without tearing the whole thing apart? What else could cause the problem besides the R&P? Where can I get a service manual for this unit?
I'm so bumbed. Thought this was going to be a good tractor.

Fireman, There are no service manuals, there are only parts manuals, you can buy one from Hoye tractor.
What else could be the problem? Well you're going to have to pull the top end off and have a look inside to see.

You have the best people to help you out right here at TBN

Make it a weekend project, can you turn a wrench?

I can. A little daunting because I have never torn into one before. Is there anything I should watch out for?
Strangely enough last night while messing with it, it freed up and stopped binding up. I had shifted gears a few times and into out of 4 wheel drive. There is still some slop but not binding. Drained some oil out and there was no metal that I could see. Could a scope see anything worthwhile before tearing it apart.

If you take it apart take a lot of pictures, they will help you when you start putting it back together.

Not familiar with scopes and don't know how you could direct one around in there.

MAYBE, the broken parts have fallen to the bottom of the casing and are not binding anymore.
Either way I would open it up and have a look, to prevent any further damage.

You want to remove the top off the rear axle, the case that holds the lift arms, its some bolts and some guide pins to hold it on.

If you can pressure wash it first or clean it up it makes it more pleasant.

If you are familiar with using a scope and familiar with what you are looking for (what your R&P looks like) yes you can gain a lot of information from a small opening to get the bore scope into the cavity.
If you are not familiar with either one it will be a experience in frustration in my opinion.
Bore scopes give a ‘fish eye’ view (very wide angle view) which can distort the picture. In addition there are lots of gears and shafts and gears that you must work around, this can be frustrating also as well as requiring patience with the bore scope.
But if you can get a parts diagram to get a feel for where in the casing you need to look and have experience with a bore scope (or know some who does) then give it a try.
Now all that said, you are going to have to tear into it at some point if you plan to fix it, so taking it apart to look is a step to fixing it.
