I have had good luck with the sprey engine cleaners you can get at the auto parts store. The foaming stuff works real well.

I got my parts today at around 3pm. I cleaned the engine of the grease dirt and paint. Still a little left. Took the cylinder head off and there was a lot of carbon. also saw carbon on one of the valves and like small blobs on the other. Took the crank out and that looked to be ok. The service manual was a lot of help in taking it apart. cant wait to get it running again and put it in my newly painted tractor.

I decided to put it back together before painting it. i spent from 10 am to 4 pm wworking on it. There is a lot of friction when i turn the crank. Is it normal when you rebuild an engine? When i put oil in it and spin the crank a couple times will it loosen up. I know the piston connecting rods are torqued right because i checked them 3 times. did i do something wrong?

Did you put oil on the parts when you put them together? You need to slather them up REAL well.

Did you do a "rebuild" or just replace some worn out parts?
Did you get the cylinder checked for out of round and taper and take the proper corrective action if there was a problem? At a minimum did you hone the cylinder walls to aid in the new rings sealing?
Did you check the valve stem and valve guide area for excessive wear and the seat and valve ground or lapped?
Did you do the 50 or so other things that a small engine technician would have done?
If not I wish you luck with your "rebuilt" engine.
Bill
