Along with good knives make sure the anvil is good and sharp as well. Basically it is a rotating pair of scissors in there. The knives spinning around and shearing off the wood against the anvil. I was at a Hazardous tree falling class this last weekend. They had a Chipper mechanic there. His recommendation for the softer wood we have around here is as small a gap as possible between the knive and anvil. On the other coast where there are harder woods go with a larger gap up to 1/4". Although that would be for big machines. His other big point to make was grease grease grease on all of the fittings. Just thought that I would pass that along.
