Benadryl!!! If it's bad enough a doctor can give it via shot or IV at about 50mg. It all depends on how bad the reaction is. A doctor's visit can be very good because she can get something for the itching along with something for the histamine release.

If your daughter got stung by fire ants, she will feel like a sharp pin prick at the bite after the initial pain goes away. Also, within a few hours, a tiny white pimple/pus pocket will form around each sting. Fire ants are far more aggresive than red ants. They will come after you in waves of hundreds if you disturb their mound. Red ants will sting you, but the entire colony will not empty out and attack you like fire ants.

If your daughter gets anything greater than redness and minor swelling, a visit to the doctor would be the best course of action.

My folks would put a wet chunk of a cigarette on the bite it worked on all insect bites actually nicotine apparently is an antiseptic.

I remember my first trip to Grand paps house in Bushnell Florida. I went fishing at a neighbors pond and seen this perfect seat, a mound about a foot and a half tall.Wow, I thought that in a good spot, even a branch to rest my pole on. Well, About 20 seconds after I sat my butt was on fire I got up and slapping these huge red ants of me. My so-called brother was falling over laughing and I ended up jumping into the pond. Will never forget either, My brother and those **** ants.

When I was a kid and the fire ants got me, the only medicine I might get was Calamine lotion. Now a days I would use Benedryl lotion and maybe their pills.

Fire ants are pretty nasty. The first trip for the kids back to FLA I made it a point to show them what a fire ant hill looks like and showed them what happens when you stir them up.

Later,
Dan

People react differently to fire ants. For most people a few bites is no big deal. For very few it can be fatal, should you encounter anaphylaxis to a point where it effects your breathing.....
and then you have some who will encounter any range of effects in between.
There are no quick fixes, however if she has a lot of bites benadryl is not a bad idea. If this is her first encounter with these hellish creatures than she should be observed carefully for the net 30-45 minutes and avoid any strenous activity. If you don't see any severe alergic reaction by then she is probably out of the woods and will only have to deal with the effects that Jinman described.
I hate fire ants:mad:

Hate the fire ants. My wife has the unique ability to always stand in the middle of the nest--of course she always insists on wearing slip on shoes with no socks.

It is too late now, but if you put Ammonia (common, ordinary household stuff) on the bites, it neutralizes the ant venom--reduced stinging, reduce pimples, reduced itching.

I tried the ammonia when I got attacked by yellow jackets. It worked like a miracle!
Just as you said, it reduced the pain, and the swelling too.:D

Fire ant bites affect me more than wasps. I itch so bad that I scratch my skin till it bleeds.

I carry several tubes of Afterbite around in my tractor, lawnmower and golfcart because if it is applied immediately after an insect bite it greatly reduces the symptoms.

After I empty out the tube, I refill it with cheap ammonia which is about all that it is and works about as well.

I can get stung by wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets and have no side effects, but if fire ants get me then I have to take Benadryl to prevent respriatory distress.

Let me see if I have this right. We folks who live in the north put up with snow and the cold, not this year - its supposed to get up 45 degrees this afternoon, are ridiculed for our lack of sanity. And yes, there are time when the temp drop to minus 20 and the wind is blowing out of the northwest at 30 mph that I question my sanity for living here. But we don't deal with this vermin you folks from south have to deal with. We have some mosquitoes, lots to be exact, but come late fall they're done.

I can't imagine going out for stroll in my back yard and coming across a mound of fireants where their occupants have every intent on killing me. My sister-in-law who lives outside of Temple Texas told me of a sting she received from a scorpion when she didn't look inside her shoe one day.

So I guess living up here doesn't seem so crazy after all. Southern folks, you keep those fireants, scorpions and killer bees all to yourself you hear.

I still would rather get bit by a fire ant than by a bear. :D
