Murph are you running a firewall? I am hooked up to 2-way satellite (full time connection) and I use Zone Alarm Pro. It fends them off and lets you know they are knocking on your door.

I have a Linux proxy server before by switch. My internet connection is done through what is called a radio via our celluar phone company. These are not too popular but are inexpensive compared to Satellite. We don't have cable available. Basically it is a small dish that sits on your house and it has to see a celluar phone tower. So it limits the people that can connect, like my neighbor can't because there is a house in his back yard that prevents him from seeing the tower.

Anyway my discussions to my computer people is that even with firewalls people can still send stuff to your computer. They just can't get things off in certain cases. I did install zone alarm pro on the 98 machine and then I had all kinds of trouble connecting that computer to the internet and when it did work it didn't work good at all and I still got all kinds of viruses coming into the 98 machine. Now my anti-virus picked it up all the time but it still is a scary thought. The best thing I did was to turn the printer and file sharing off even though I didn't have anything shared and this has stopped the problems of virus's coming into the 98 machine. However, now I can't see the computer from the other machines. I guess my big point is in the previous posts one of the people was saying to stay with 95 or 98. I don't believe that is a good thing. I believe Microsoft is putting all of their labors in the newer versions to protect them and 95 and 98 has gone by the wayside. That 95 and 98 are a lot more vulnerable than the poster thinks.

just my opinions and experiences.

That might be the understatement of the year. There have only been a few of the viruses that would affect 2000/XP and not 9X. But tons the other way.

Now if you want security go back to 3.1. You never heard of any of these attacks back in the days then did you.....oh I forgot that was because nobody was connected to anything and the only thing people did on their computers was played solitaire. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I agree, 98 is no good. We had it on three machines in my office and all got viruses, even with a firewall and zonealarm. It was a nightmare keeping them running. Windows 2000 has been much better to us.

I have had two machines at home with 98. One is no longer operational it had so many problems. The other is barely operational. Because I need a working computer I upgraded and bought a Dell with Windows XP professional two days ago. So far it's working extremely well.

Windows 98 is my least favorite OS, for sure. At least 3.1 and 95 worked most of the time! Only time will tell if XP is better than 2000, but I'm betting it will be.

I find the biggest reason behind the proliferation of Viruses and hacks is that the software created to do it can be used by anyone. It no longer takes any special skills to hack just enough knowledge to do a proper search.

And yes Microsoft has a big target on them as the world writes most software good or bad to Microsoft standards. But truth be told we get all OS products hacked. Linux is by far no exception and in fact Unix has in the past always been a target. It is the OS the internet was founded on and the first requirement a hacker needs is access.

Back in the good old days the best firewall was unhooking from the wall plate. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Never had a hacker get by that one /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just didn't get very far very fast.
Just teasing you,

I think you all didn't understand my point when I said Win98 is better and WinXP has a bug. I for one who had used several OS from Linux/Unix to Dos, Windows, etc etc can say that "the lighter software/OS the better" and this is especially true if your computer is a home pc (not a network pc.) Then,..

Unix/Linux is the best when I use complex programmings.

DOS is the best only when I use simple programmings.

Win31 is the best Windows version (but no more attachment drivers available for this version anymore.)

Wing95 is better and lightest OS - its main disadvantage is it's not so easy to find some driver softwares for new attachments (digital camera, scanner, etc etc)

Win98 is good/lighter than newer Windows versions because adds-ons (microsoft free softwares such as internet explorer) are much less than newer windows versions - This gives you better control of OS (win98) yourself. Its disadvantage against the newer windows versions like WinXP/etc is that if your computer is a network computer, this 98 version may not be so versatile. I have used Win98 much for visual applications and have had no problem at all.

WinXP and other never versions - I myself never used them, but used them at other computers. Especially WinXP has a serious bug (according to what I have heard.) This bug is not similar to other kinds of bugs. To get a virus through the other bugs, you should be attacked (by email, etc) or you should touch your hand somewhere on the net (that is, downloading a virused file.) That is, you still have the control of your computer even if there are these kinds of bugs. Win98 is like that - I know where to touch, don't use any anti-virus software and never got flue. But this bug in WinXP (a TCP bug?) will take the control of your computer from you. Once you are connected to the global network (internet), its TCP? script of your WinXP will automatically get the viruses on the net even if you don't open any email attachment or even if you don't download any file on the net. You will not realize you are receiving a virus through your port. I'm saying this is serious bug of WinXP because it's uncontrollable. Microsoft realized this bug in WinXP immediately and added a patch.
So, so many patches in newer versions should be downloaded because if you don't, the bugs can take control of your computer. On the other hand, with lighter systems like Win98 (especially at home pc's), you can keep control of your computer even if these older versions have many bugs. However, lighter versions aren't recommended at network computers because these hackers can easily walk in your network computers through so many bugs in older versions of WinOS. Summarize: the lighter OS at home PCs the heavier OS at networks. Ps: "OS is in the eye of beholder";-)
