Sorry Counselor, a lawyer, making $???.00 to $400.00 an hour is not your average salary in the U.S., So YES I am serious
For example, I am retired, have a decent pension , and have a SMALL income from my farm. My gas and diesel consumption in gallons last month (winter)for three Vehicles and a 41 hp Tractor was 204 gallons(no public trans), when I put my boat on Lake Ontario (Apr to Oct) and my 23hp Cub cadet Lawn Tractor (spring, summer, fall) into the mix , I use at least 270 gal monthly X $2.65 average (NY prices)= $715 monthly X 12 mo = $8580. a year. Then add home heating oil (700 gal) $1500 the total is over $10,000..On last years tax return, I paid less than $10,000 in FEDERAL income tax.
For me the OIL COMPANIES get more of my money than the federal gov

I think your right, I don't know for sure, my mistake

I do believe that you are using roughly 51 gallons a week according to your post. now if you have a vehicle that gets 20 miles per gallon that is somewhere in the neighborhood of over 1000 miles a week for someone retired that might be a lot of miles. If you were not retired and putting that kind of mileage on your vehicle you would probably be paying more in taxes than you are to the oil companies.

Chevron (Hugo Chavez) oil refinery near Oakland, Cal. on fire, since all the refineries in US are at or near full capacity, get ready to open your wallets wide. So, when are you scientists going to invent the GAS PILL we just add to water and drive away.
The question I have for all:
Who gets the major portion of your paycheck A) U.S.Goverment, excluding FICA and state taxes or B) the OIL Companies :(

Oil is down 17% so far this year, that is a drop of 1% each and every day of the year 2007.

With oil @ $50 a barrel and the dollar gaining significantly on both the Euro and the Yen, you'll be able to blow more of your paycheck at Wally World on bottled water at $1,600 a barrel.....

Of that $2.65 per gallon in NY state, 60.1 cents for gasoline and 65.6 cents for diesel pays the average local, state and federal taxes.

If gasoline prices had stayed on pace with inflation since 1970 we would now be paying around $6.00 a gallon.

Why do people always use this argument and the one of over in x, they pay___.????

I use about 20 gal per month in my personal vehicle.
About 30 gal for all of summer use in mowers and such.
wife does not work and burns over 20 gal per week in her car. I think she needs to get a job, then she would not have so much time to waste gas.

Not everyone is retired - so your tax basis doesn't reflect people who still work. I paid a little more than $25,000 to the feds this year plus state income tax, plus local taxes (I just rent my land from the county, apparently.). I pay waaaay more in money in taxes than I ever pay for fuel.

Oh, by the way - did you figure the hidden federal taxes you pay? Excise taxes on the phone bill, on fuel, etc? Or, don't you count the hidden federal taxes as being real?

Will "Wally World" take the Euro,Yen ?

I guess they are well hidden, but now that they are exposed, nothing has changed for this retired ,wannabee just like SkyPup when I grow up, person.
Does anybody know when a family of 4, who qualify for most exemptions/credits ,up to what income do they pay NO FED TAX,
40,000 ?, 45,000 ? , then how much further up the economic food chain do they have to go to pay 10,000 in FED TAX

The point I was trying to make is the same point that another member posted. Most people when they retire their income goes down. My wife drives 220 miles a day to work so we spend a lot of money on fuel, but our income is not too bad so we pay a lot more money in taxes. You have quite a bit of oil product expenses on a retirement income. If you were still working full time would you not pay more in taxes than you do in oil products ?
