With help from here, I've gotten entire deck restored & have just put final coat of paint on. The one part I can't seem to find a replacement for is this "paper thin" washer thing, that goes on before I use
the self tapping bolts to hold on spindles.... does anyone know what they're called? or where i can find them... or are they necessary to replace?🤔Mahalo for your help... in advance!😎🤙

We called them external star washers. Though if the head of the bolt is serrated, you shouldn't need them.

Most hardware stores should have asst. of them.

That doesn't mean they don't have them. :giggle: Typically, they're in the drawers not the bins.

Why not just go buy lock washers, serves the same purpose. Can’t believe hardware store or Napa doesn’t know what they are, geez. Be sure and put anti-seize on the threads.

Any lock washer will do. If you can’t find any lock washers put a little blue lock tight on the bolts.

Toothlock washers..

That name should ring a bell at the hardware store... as you don't need them in qty of 100.

The clue is in your use of the phrase "Paper thin"

The bolts used to mount the spindle housings are serrated on the underside of the flange (Check yours) and I believe what you show in the photo is just a paint flake that has come off the deck when you unscrewed the bolt above it.

Because it was under the head of the bolt it couldn't flake-off like the surrounding paint until you undid the bolt itself.

Try folding that yellow paint in half and it will just crumble.

The deck you have refurb'd will have been pretty rusty/flakey, no?

You Sir, are exactly right... I finally came to same conclusion when additional trips to Home Depot & Lowe's alsolefteveryone scratching their heads.... I asked.... " Could this just be the paint?".... several people agreed... whew! no more running around! Yes, it was pretty bad, that's why I chose to refurbish! I'm very pleased with my results.
