Rent or buy a chipper-- I need to decide soon

Sorry sir, from my point of view, this wood chipper is not good, I see the wood jump out from the feeding chute many times, obviously this manufacturer is simply copying from each other, they didn't know some key issues to produce a good chipper.

As a comparison, you can see my chipper, the feeding is more smooth than yours. Nova Tractor BX52 wood chipper shredder in action - YouTube
As an end user, you will never have chance to see many different chipper's performance.

I m lucky, as a sales guy, manufacturer, sourcing manager for my foreign partners, I have chance to see deeply close to some of them. Just some of them.

LOL!!! that's freaking hilarious. Yours is so much different that you copy the naming sequence????? bahahaha, yeah dude, I was born at night, but not last night. You won't make me think yours is any better than mine, and I bet I paid less too. what a maroon, take your lame sales pitch somewhere else, in case you didn't figure it out yet, we're not buyin it here. literally

I'm going to add this too, I just went to your website, and the ONLY difference in "yours" and mine, is a little bit of difference in the shape, and yours has legs. everything else is EXACTLY THE SAME....well except mine is a BX42 and yours is 52.....what a fake

The Woodmaxx and Woodland Mills 8" and 6" chippers are each their own designs, built in China. The Nova chipper looks different from them and the Jinma Wallenstein clones. It's significantly larger with a much heavier rotor.

@plowhog it sounds like you have plenty of use for a chipper if you're doing a lot of the tree work or clearing yourself. Woodmaxx also has US made 8 and 9" models with hydrostatic feed drive. A few people here have them and like them.

sorry but no, his BX52 has a 78 pound rotor, my bx42 has a 78 pound rotor. His shows a weight of 452 lbs, mine was 431, but mine doesn't have the extra metal on the top above the pins, nor the legs, that's easily the difference in weight. His is no different, just another copy with just a little bit of a different look on the outside to make it appear at a glance to be different....even kept on with the bx--numbering system

Yep. Dead wood is tougher to chip.

I don't notice the chipper struggling with it significantly. Could be just the species I have. It has to be trimmed a bit more tightly at the side branches won't bend as much under the rollers. The worst thing though is the dust. I have to wear a breathing mask and try to park the tractor so the wind does not blow the dust back over me.

@ploghow the 8" models have heavier rotors that spin twice as fast (the belt drive is a 1:2). So they have a lot more flywheel energy. That's even more important than the throat size.

Softwoods aren't so bad, but dead, dry maple or oak is pretty hard stuff. :)

We have one like this we bought used. Have run it for a long time and even replaced the motor. We probably only have about $3000 total invested in it including replacing the motor. Just watch Craigslist and they pop up once in a while. It's a professional "chuck-n-duck" style chipper where the chipper drum feeds the material as it's cutting it. Very effective and fast.

I bought a 12" Morbark disc chipper with a bad engine for $2000 off CL and found a 65HP JD diesel with 600 hours on eBay for $2500, another $500 in misc parts and it will chip almost anything you can force down the chute, that being said I have only used it about 6-times in as many years which is why I suggested rent one. I did learn a lot about hydraulics and diesel engines in the process of rebuilding so I have no regrets.

You must be a real lumberjack to throw a 10" log into the chute remaining in compliance with your safety notice. :)

We used to do burn piles and only cut firewood when the trees didn't have their leaves but now with a chipper we do it whenever we want and just go around after and clean up the branches and any other brush and downed limbs in the area.

I ordered an 8" chipper today. Thank you all for your input.

The more I investigated, the more justification I see for owning a chipper. The apple orchard has about 15 trees that need a lot of pruning every year. So now I will prune and chip instead of prune and haul. Ditto for the small pines, etc. And then there is always the great quantity of downed wood from winter storms.

Thank you all for the input and suggestions-- they were very helpful!!

Good thing is, you can compost the chips.

Just be careful, okay?

Congrats on making a decision. :)
