Rent or buy a chipper-- I need to decide soon

If you have 50 factories producing a BX42 chipper, how many of them are paying license fees to Wallenstein to use their design? Or is such production based on stolen designs?

So-- here is your chance to step up. How many Chinese factories are paying Wallenstein a license fee to use their design? And product name, BX42?

funny you say this, because when I went online to download the "Titan" version owners manual, their link took me to the wallenstein manual. I know this, because the sheer bolts are different sizes. I also learned this when trying to find a 'how to assemble' video because I didn't get a book with mine. The farm hand brand (I think that's it) is exactly like mine, and a guy had a video on putting it together and I followed his instructions

do some serious internet searching, I'm 99% sure any model you find that starts with 'BX--' is going to be a chinese knockoff of the wallentstein. I bought the BX42S from titan that's good up to 4" with over 30 PTO HP....but on my little tractor, I can get 3" through it, although like you, anything that size or bigger is cut up for firewood anyway, so it's a moot point.

as has already been said, these are basically all the same 'clone' with a different sticker/label on it. I'm not dissatisfied or disappointed in this one AT ALL, and there are versions out there with the different feed options. Seems we have a novatractor salesman here, all fine and good, but look at some of the other ones too. One thing about buying the Titan, is I got a nickel credit for every dollar spent, and when I bought my chipper, I instantly had more than enough 'credits' to have them ship me a 3 pack of bolt on hooks to put on my FEL..... ;) I think they have the bx62 as well as the model I bought.

good luck! I'm in the 'buy don't rent' crowd, you'll get your use out of it!

They don't pay me as salesman, I'm just confident in what I produced.

About Titan, they bought from a factory nearby me here, I guess Titan stop to supply their BX42 chipper this moment. As an importer, they can simply decide not to sell anything. But this is a disaster for manufacturer, we invested huge money into supply chain, like mold and fixture, spare parts inventory, etc.

Thanks papa. Ya, I need to buy .... and find a place to park it when not in use. This has been very helpful -- thanks to all.

my LS XB3025 has 19.2 PTO hp and I can run up to a 3" in it. Not sure how many hp you're running on PTO, but you'll be surprised how good this works

I completely design my wood chippers, I m suffering by this trouble too, competitors copy my design easily, who pay me license fee???

I feel your pain. Your team must do extensive market research-- after extensive analysis, your marketing team found a new name for your product: the BX52. What a coincidence!

Is that the one with the rubber flywheel?

Sorry sir, from my point of view, this wood chipper is not good, I see the wood jump out from the feeding chute many times, obviously this manufacturer is simply copying from each other, they didn't know some key issues to produce a good chipper.

As a comparison, you can see my chipper, the feeding is more smooth than yours. Nova Tractor BX52 wood chipper shredder in action - YouTube
As an end user, you will never have chance to see many different chipper's performance.

I m lucky, as a sales guy, manufacturer, sourcing manager for my foreign partners, I have chance to see deeply close to some of them. Just some of them.

The Woodmaxx and Woodland Mills 8" and 6" chippers are each their own designs, built in China. The Nova chipper looks different from them and the Jinma Wallenstein clones. It's significantly larger with a much heavier rotor.

@plowhog it sounds like you have plenty of use for a chipper if you're doing a lot of the tree work or clearing yourself. Woodmaxx also has US made 8 and 9" models with hydrostatic feed drive. A few people here have them and like them.

OK, back to basics. I think I should buy a chipper. I can justify that.

I won't chip anything past 4", so if I get a 6" compatible chipper I should be well within capacity. Now it is ... which one to buy?

I have about 50+ acres that is forested, the rest is not. It is heavily "overstocked" and I will likely do a timber harvest in Spring.

Around here, a "timber harvest" means cutting down the mature (valuable) trees and leaving the rest..... leaves an ugly mess too that you either have to clean up or look at. Disturbs the forest ecosystem too. Any rare birds or other critters that prefer undisturbed forest will leave. Although I deliberately leave much of my forest untouched, in the areas that do get attention, I clear out doomed poplar saplings, vines that climb and smother the mature trees, and selectively remove some brush and deadwood to reduce fire hazard. Careful to leave some large swathes of rhododendron because the deer take cover there. The goal is to give the bigger trees a better chance to thrive. A truly mature forest--rare to see these days--is a cathedral of huge trees with a relatively clear forest floor. Only when one of these giants falls do the saplings get to grow. My forest is well on its way to this. To wander through it is awe-inspiring. I feel responsible for it, as a good steward. So I try to have a light hand.

Have heard some relatively rare birds, like the yellow-billed cuckoo. Found a venus fly-trap growing wild! (I had always assumed it was tropical). A frog that was unable to be identified by our state biologist. Actually saw a whip-poor-will; they are shy and you hear them but almost never see them. Silver foxes. I guess we all value different things, but I wouldn't trade all this for the 10 grand or so I could get for the timber.

The estimate for timber net proceeds is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. But, lucky me, we are not doing this for money. We have held off for many years against family pressure to do this-- researching and learning.

The local registered professional foresters have all said that the forest health will be enhanced by a timber harvest. It is so overstocked that nothing below the forest canopy has a chance to grow. It is causing a reorientation of species due to this, with cedars taking over because pines can't get enough light to grow. We could cut up to 90% or 100% of timber legally; and for a lot more money. Instead, we are looking at 40% to 50% for forest health. We are stewards of the land.

Based on your prior posts, I will insist any standing dead trees not be removed. Those are habitat-- and trees with no merchantable value. I don't want to cut down a nest of baby birds just to remove a tree that does not need removing. So your advice is appreciated!
