Just a thought but if you have mature oaks there you could possibly get a timber crew to do the work in exchange for the logs or pay them a smaller amount in addition to the logs rather than paying standard rates to a general excavating crew.

What is the tradeoff between a week without pay (or a week vacation pay) plus rental vs. hiring the job out? If the job is not done in a week now what?

Sadly, my business is now 90% shut down from the virus (live sports TV business) - so I got the time... LOTS of time.

Thanks for all the advise here, guys.

I'm about willing to try it... if I overcome the fear of spending the rental money, and making a mess. The closest rental place is a Deere outfit, so I think it would be a JD 655.

Another different thought, as a backup plan, maybe call the regular guy and see what he would charge to finish using your rental equipment. Dont forget about fuel ~ 40 gallons a day and see if you have to lube...
