With spring comming I have many projects for my new B-26. I had hoped to purchase a hydraulic auger and breaker. In This economy They may have to wait. I was wondering if anyone has any opinions on renting attachments and concerns about hydraulic contamination?

Angler,

If you find someone who will rent you only the implement, be sure they are in good shape internally and won't be feeding contaminated oil to your system and cause you problems. You could add a filter on the return side to catch any trash that is being sent from the hydraulic motor to your return line / coupler on the B26.

If you rent anything mechincally driven on the PTO, be sure the shaft will fully collapse when youraise the hitch. If not, youcan damage your tractor or the gear box on the implement.

Most rental yards do not rent just attachments - yours might, though.

Good luck!

In my opinion, if your going to use it for more then a week, Buy it, don't rent it. Rentals add up so quicky its scarey. For a couple days rental, it could almost be 6months of payments if you were financing it.
What about just financing the attachments over 5 years or something similar?

I actually rented a Cat D5 dozer for a weeks worth of work, the bill ended up being $2400 from the rental company, now I need it again in the spring, so i decided to finance a used one to own, $2400 now covers 5 months of payments and I can use it more then a week.

About hydraulic contamination, usually its not a concern, all depends on the rental company and thier standards. I'v never had issues with that.

Most quality equipment rentals have good implements for rent. You can usually get a reasonable price on a one day, three day or one week period. Gives you a chance to try something out before you go the long buck and buy it.

Buying before trying can be expensive and result in wishing you bought something different. I Rented a "York" rake once with wheels and a drop down blade. Never thought I would ever use the blade and never thought I would need something that heavy duty. I ended up using the blade as much as the rake.

When I buy, it will have both wheels and a blade.

Guess it depends on the area but around here tractor implement rentals are hard to come by. What you will find are skid steer implements. The problem there is that most skid steer implements that are hydraulic like the auger you mention will require more hydraulic flow than you have on a B26. There are augers that will work on your tractor but they are not the ones rental yards will have for skid steers.

In This economy They may have to wait

...also in this economy cash talks.

Farms supply stores in CNY use to rent 3PH attachments.

Personally if you have a limited use for a particular
attachment I think it's a good idea to rent.

Years ago we decided to get our Kubota because of a backhoe. Thankfully the dealer kind of knew my situation and convinced me it wasn't in my best interest...and for that I'm very thankful.

btw we use to have a drainage problem here but the front bucket did 80% of the light excavating.

The few backhoe projects I've had around here I hired out for a song in the off season and they both cost me less than the backhoe attachment.

Plus those projects would have taken so long with a smaller hoe that I be in a position to constantly mount/dismount the hoe ...YIKES.

As far as buying an auger goes if I was going to use it every year I'd buy one. But once every 3-4 years...I dunno. Good luck with your decision angler.

Around here the regular rental places don't rent attachments, but one of the tractor dealers does. They also rent tractors, have much better selection than the few models the rental yard carries.

I have rented grapples, brooms and augers, never had any issues. I have a B26 and it will run a skid steer auger and small breaker. I like renting as you will always have the right tool for the job.

Regarding renting an auger, if it is going to take more than a day or two to do the job, buy one. I got a Linebach Line 7200 for $369. My family life makes it hard to get more than a few hours at a time to work on project. It took weeks of 1-4 hours here and there to get all my fence in. At $69/day rental, I would have easily spent double to rent. Now that I'm done, I can probably get 3/4 of what I paid for it.

So, that is another consideration; if you buy, you can sell when done. If you buy used, like I did with my box blade, you can probably get what you paid for it when done.
