Renting out your tractor

Well personally I would not rent/loan, especially to friends or family.

My brush hog busted a seal in the gearbox. It had about 5 hours on it. Whom would you have blamed, them, you, or just equipment failure. This is just an example of what could happen.

But if you are intent on renting it, then I would probably say $50/hr.

The best response to "Renting or Borrowing" I have ever heard was when I heard a farmer respond this way to a request to either rent or borrow a tractor. His response was "Son I don't rent or let people borrow my tractors or wife". I thought this was a good response and have adopted the old fellows philosophy.

I have always found that what others consider "normal use" I consider abuse or neglect.

I have lent out my landscape rake to my neighbor before. I left it at his place for 2 weeks and when i got it back it was washed and looked better than when I brought it down there. Since then I havent lent out any other machinery but I can say I would lend out another implement to that neighbor if he needed one for a few days. Otherwise if my machine leaves home I go with it and I am the only one that runs it.

Well I would rent my wife, but not my truck or tractor. LOL. OK, I wouldn't rent the wife, well maybe if I could buy a new tractor or truck.

Don't know how rentals work out there, but when I have rented like a tractor etc here they will only take payment by credit card which must have a minimum balance of X number of $. You bring it back busted get ready for a big hit on your card.

In the past when I have lent tools to friends, neighbors and family the majority of the time there were problems.

Hi, all.

I'm in the process of establishing a business and plan to buy a 5000-series Deere. To justify the expense, I've found 2 farms that are willing to rent the tractor. Any thoughts on what I should be charging? Per hour, I'd guess, rather than per day? It'd be owned under an LLC, so I'm not really concerned with liability - and they are friends that I would trust would care for my tractor as well as they do for their own.

You might be better off if you still want to charge them, then charge them less than what is average but work in a deal that if they have a piece of equipment you could borrow once in a while, that would be a little payment sort of. That way they don't feel like they're getting ripped off by their friend and your getting some money for repairs.

You didn't state whether you were buying a new or used tractor. If new, there is normally a "break in" period normally associated with the first 50 hours of use. I agree with the comments made by the majority of previous members. I think that you, yourself, would be more apt in taking care of and maintaining your tractor than someone else. One thought comes to mind: "Rode HARD and put up WET".

Several years ago loaned my bob cat to a neighbor for a few days. When the machine came back the head was cracked. Of course they claimed it was running fine when they returned it. After that no one borrows my equipment. No good deed goes unpunished. I wouldn't rent my tractor or any other equipment.
