Over the years my Kubota has seen scrtches, dings, dents and just plain faded and had the paint worn off from feet and hands.

How difficult is it to do a reasonable repaint job? I do have a compressor and spray gun. Have never used it on metal.

Last thing I tried to repaint was a Schwinn Stingray thirty odd years ago. I did a horrible job then.

What do you consider reasonable. As near as I can tell, a good paint job starts with the preparation. No matter how good you are with the sprayer, a bad prep will show through. So are you ready to do the necessary stripping and cleaning?

I guess I am a little surprised that with all the people who have older tractors nobody else has piped up with suggestions. Maybe there is more work to it than can be considered "worth it". Good luck

Hi Egon,

I have painted an old JD that was solid RUST color when I got it. The color made it look more like an IH than JD. For the sheet metal, used a wire brush in a grinder, went down to bare metal, primed and painted.

The prep and post work is harder than the spraying. It can be done. I live in town now and don't have a place to do it, so I won't be doing more of that.

Of course, if you do it, post pics here!

really depends on what u mean by reasonable! prep work is most important. depending on the age of your tractor some of it might be plastic, and not sure if that needs special attention for painting. got to be a paint expert on this site . i have painted a few cars , many years ago, and the best i can say is they looked painted. Egon, here are a few links for you to check out. The first is a book you can purchase: How to Restore Your Farm Tractor
This one is about a product to protect the painting:
Everbrite
Not sure about this one as it was down when I tried it:
Gravesimplement
I hope you can find some useful info in these. John

Frank:

No plastic. It's a B7100. Lots of clean up required on the loader. Wondering if the decals are importent enough to replace or if they can be replaced. I've a little syphon sand blaster that will help but takes time.

I may have to replace a throwout bearing and do some checking on the hydro controls. Thought that would be a good time for repaint as the tractor should be in pieces.

Good paint results take work. I would have as many parts as possible bead blasted and use your siphon unit for everything else. yes you can get decals. They may not be the original style but decals and safety stickers should be available.
I suggest as process like this----

1. bead blast to remove rust.
2. Metal prep with a Dupont stabilizer prep.
3. Prime with Dupont Vari-Prime in the red oxide flavor
4. Either have the hood and visible parts then taken to a auto body shop and pro shot or---using Dupont Centari with the GLOSS HARDENER---shoot the parts. You will need a production style gun like a Binks 2001 etc. Do at least two cross coats with a flash time between them. The paint will likely dry with a slight orange peel. I would then color sand it to remove 70% of the orange peel and then buff. Install decals and shoot a urethane clear as recommended by the local paint supply shop or skip the clear. That should produce a finish similar to the original paint job--slight orange peel--decent gloss. I would Line-X the floor pan.
A pro paint shop can mix paint. Since different brands and families of paints use different dyes sometimes it is not possible to get exact color matches but since you are doing a full repaint this will not be a problem.

If it comes in an aerosol can--it ain't no good--just wasteing your time. I might consider getting the bucket powder coated. Maybe in black because the orange powder coat will not match the finish paint completely--unless you reverse match it--bucket first and then mix the finish paint to match that. The powder coat place will likely do their own bead blasting and metal prep.

Good paint work takes money and time, there are no short cuts to a pro job. J

Nice looking paint job; and you're right, orange looks a lot better on that tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
