I go to Northerntools' web site sometimes just to see the clever sayings that they have at the top. One of my favorites is something along the lines of "Dirty fingernails don't make you a man. Missing fingernails... Now that makes you a man!"

As many times as I go to Northerntool.com to look up things, buy stuff, etc. and I'd never noticed those little sayings before.

Whenever I know I'm gonna be elbows in grease --- I grab the latex gloves. I noticed that many of the shop mechanics are usin' them too.

Little jobs or somethin' that I'm not gonna get into that old black diesel oil, I'll clean up with hand cleaner.

Great thread!

While dispoable gloves are great to keep your hands clean, some people may be allergic to the gloves or powder. Before you buy a big box, test a few. I have used gloves at work and found my hands blistering as a result. I have found some that do not effect my hands.

There are a lot of folks with SERIOUS latex allergies. Sometimes the allergies develop over a period of time when folks are repetitively exposed. Medical folks are one group with these problems.

Luckily there are other materials for gloves besides latex. Nitrile gloves are pretty good for guy work even though not quite so fine for sensitive doctor work.

I was unaware of the talc causing an allergic reaction. Starch replaced talk (finer and lighter) as the glove powder of choice with lots of glove makers and users. The starch seems to take in latex allergens and make the problem worse than when using talc. So far I can use any of the latex or nitrile gloves from Harbor Freight with no noticeable effect but it is a roll of the dice if or when I might develop the problem.

In addition to the allergy concerns, the latex tends to be somewhat permeable to organic compounds (like oils and greases). This is probably more of an issue when working with things more hazardous to health than diesel fuel and motor oil, but it's information. Do with it what you will.

Nitrile are my favorite. Vinyl is good inert material, but not as comfortable. Vinyl is not as stretchy.

I don't know how many mechanics use the disposable gloves, but I was surprised to see boxes of them on my brother's Matco Tool truck a few years ago. He said he sold quite a lot of them. So I thought they'd be a good idea when I was using my parts washer with Varsol in it. Wrong again! The darned things didn't actually dissolve, but they softened and stretched out of shape and were useless for me.

Hand washing of dishes is less energy conservative than a good dishwasher and typically takes more hot water.

Thats a nice line spun by dishwasher companies but anyone with a dishwasher knows its bogus. That theory relies on not pre-rinsing any dishes, efficiently stacking the dishwasher to the absolute max everytime, using the most economical setting everytime, conveniently ignoring any trays, pans or saucepans that will need to be hand scrubbed anyway, and having a dishwasher that will perform faultlessly without any need for servicing for about 20 years.

I've fixed a few dishwashers over the years and i can tell you they are probably the worst designed of all home appliances.

Every time I use gloves for mechanical work small stuff gets dropped.:D

At the end of the project there is usually as much oil inside the gloves as on the outside.:D

But I do keep on using them.:D :D
