Bird, Our lives would make good segments for a sitcom!

alchemysa, No secret about the brand, I didn't mean to withhold the info, just didn't remember to mention it. You know how we older citizens sometimes have difficulty with our... uh... you know.

Hand washing of dishes is less energy conservative than a good dishwasher and typically takes more hot water.

Making ham salad or cheese mix for sandwiches will do as good, Egon!

Am I the only one that has a problem with my hands SWIMMING in sweat when I wear those tight plastic gloves? Tried it once. Took about 10 minutes before I had so much water in the gloves they were slipping all around (& they were TIGHT when I put them on) & they felt DISGUSTING.

I keep my hands clean by being the scullery maid here. No dishwasher (although I've been looking at those "dish-drawers" as we don't generate enough dirty dishes to fill a full-sized machine).

Ya, I can't stand the sweaty hands either. Rather have them dirty.

I bought a dw fr Sears 4-5 yrs ago. Can't remember the brand. It was a notch or two up from bottom line. The salesman said one of the differences was more insulation (noise). Lightbulb goes on in brain! I had enough room in the cabinet to line it w 1/2" thk foil/foam board you use on the outside of the house (3 sides & top). Then I made four pads out of 1/16 thk G-10 fiberglass sheet w a square of innertube under each one to isolate the feet from the floor. You can barely hear it running when you're standing next to it.

Very clever handling of the acoustic part of the problem, what did you do to make it wash dishes? Or maybe it does a good job...

I too hate having my hands imprisoned in their own individual saunas and going past prune skin to worse. You can't put enough talc or starch or white flour (it works too) to last very long when your hands are sweating much. I have tried drain holes in the gloves but it doesn't help[ much. Maybe if they made the gloves with absorbent cloth on the back side, including fingers, you'd get a decent period of time before the cloth was saturated. Maybe someone will come up with a way to make a membrane that passes water vapor like the "miracle cloth" used in parkas and boots but not pass liquid. This might let the gloves breathe enough to reduce the sweat problem. So far the only good cure I have found is to air conditioin the shop so my hands don't sweat much.

It is the best Kenmore available. It is in stainless steel. The controls are barely visible (unobtrusive but handy) at the top of the door.

I mounted mine on a raised platform rather than on the floor. It is very comfortable to use. It is much much easier to reach the bottom for loading and unloading than if it were mounted on the floor. I can touch my toes but prefer not needing to just to handle stuff in the dishwasher.

I mounted the dishwasher in an island with a large sink. The island is bi-level. The sink being mounted at the lower level with the faucet, spray, and soap dispenser and the upper level blocking the view of the sink from the dining room and living room portions of the great room.

The dishwasher is mounted 8 inches above the floor which makes it oh so very much more convenient. I was prepared to add acoustical treatment around the unit if needed but much of the time when it is running you can't hear it unless you are close, there is no other sound, or you are straining to pick it out. It does not interfere with music or TV or conversation with guests.

It really does do a very good job virtually all the time with little or no pre-washing. I do tend to hold items to get more of a load rather than running it after every meal. Often it will be run only once a day with twice a day sometimes and virtually NEVER more than twice. I tend to let a little water stand in bowls that have been used to make batter or whatever so it doesn't dry hard while waiting. Likewise skillets and such. I do not pre-scrub anything and often do not clean much of anything off plates including spaghetti sauce or worse. It does the standard two washes with multiple rinses so it just isn't necessary. I do use the drying enhancer liquid in the automatic dispenser so crystal ware doesn't come out spotted. We do moderate out detergent quantity in line with the maker's suggestions as too much of the powerful detergent will cloud the crystal over time.

There may be better machines. I know for a fact there are more expensive ones. I do not personally know of a better machine to recommend. If you read back issues of Consumers Reports at the library or whatever you can get good reliable information. Frequently their scientifically measured performance tests show the most expensive (often imported) brands are not the best performers.

Of course, your mileage may vary.

Before the next door neighbor found their dishwasher leak was just the discharge hose yesterday, he knew that my wife and I were going to the Grapevine Mills Mall and Sears has an outlet store in the mall, so he asked me to see what they had, and what prices on dishwasher. They had between 55 and 60 dishwashers on the floor with prices from $219.99 to $819.99. I think they were all Kenmores except for one white KitchenAid (I should have gotten the model number but didn't). Anyway, the KitchenAid had been marked down in price twice and was $369.99 yesterday. The young salesman (who told me he was just a part time employee) said the Kenmores had a one year warranty and the KitchenAid a two year warranty.

Our KitchenAid is stainless steel, and I just looked at Sears website and they list 340 dishwashers of many brands from $189.99 for the cheapest Kenmore to $1,044.99 for either their highest priced white Kenmore or the highest priced stainless KitchenAid. That's quite a price difference.

While we're on the subject of gloves, I learned a trick the other day from a co-worker...

He's like me in that he buys leather gloves that are just a bit too small. He breaks them in by filling them with cheap shaving cream and then working in them for a while.

He says the shaving cream feels really gross when you put the gloves on, but the skin conditioners in the shaving cream really soften the leather and allow it to stretch and custom fit your hand.

That's interesting. Sounds like what I do w stiff new leather boots. Fill w hot water (fr the faucet, not the tea kettle!), let sit for 5 minutes. Dump the water and mop up the excess w paper towels. Put on heavy woolen socks and wear them for the day. You'll never get blisters and they custom form to your foot.

BTW, what's shaving cream??? ;)
