Price Check Repair or replace?

You should also consider that there may be a fair value in parting out your old one and putting that toward a new one.

the q you really have to ask yourself is the little tractor worth dropping $1900 on to repair.id be more inclined to trade it in a new or slightly used tractor.and use that $1900 as a down payment.

I think it is an easier question than most are making it out to be.

Do you want to spend $2,000 to have a tractor, or $20,000.

If money isn't an issue, get a shiny clean new one. To me, the $2,000 is a no-brainer. Do that, keep it another 11 years.

My 11 yr old BX22 is in the shop. I fully intended to run it till i no longer have need of it. I'm in my mid-70's & don't plan to check out any time soon, but you never know! [snip]

Well, Tdog, if you're in reasonably good health, 75 is the new 55.

I'm assuming your BX22 does pretty much everything you really need it for, so there's that. If it's just a tool for you to get chores done, putting $2000 in it to get another 11 years or more makes a whole lot of sense. But if you love using it, and from time to time think that a new tractor, maybe a bit bigger with some more features, perhaps even a cab, would make you very happy, then this is a good opportunity to make that move. Especially if your financial situation would let you do that without much strain. Practicality is good, but there's also a lot to be said just for improving the quality of life. I've managed perfectly well with my B2150 for over 20 years, and it has been a rare occasion that I really needed a bigger tractor (Snowmageddon 2010 being particularly notable). But the joy I get every time I climb in my Kioti NX4510HST w/cab, turn on the AC and stereo and grade the road, dig something out or push over something really big is worth a lot to me, in and of itself. Call me crazy, but I now can identify with the TBN members who say they are actually looking forward to winter. No risk of frostbite for me this winter after a few hours of pushing snow.

Well I heard from the dealer - - seems they think it MIGHT be repaired for about $550.. that sounds pretty good. However, he warned me that if they got into it & have to break it down completely [not sure what that means], it would be closer to $1500. Either way, I'll get the work done. While the thought of a shiny new one has some appeal, I've gotten pretty used to this old girl & think i stick with her. Wish they'd hurry, I've got projects to do.
I'll try to report back how it turns out.

Thanks for all the replies!

You might want to look at the WSM to see what is really involved in replacing the seal.

One thing to keep in mind is if you trade it in needing repairs the dealer will take that off the top of your trade price. So either way you are going to pay for the repair. It has always been my policy to keep a machine in top form that way it is always worth repairing. To let a machine run down to junk status just seems counter productive.
