Residential Mail - Do You Need Saturday Delivery?

Please, do not turn this thread into a healthcare debate. Not only is it discussing politics, which violates TBN Terms Of Service, it's nice coming to a discussion forum where the topic is not discussed.

Regarding the question of Saturday delivery, I wouldn't miss it.

That healthcare thread got shut down faster than a toyota with a stuck accelerator.

I think the post office could close a lot of post offices. I live in the country, I have one post office two miles one way, and 5 miles two other ways. Every little burb in the country doesn't what to give up their unique zip code or their post office. I can drive by 3 of them just to get to my kids school.

Mail delivery????? The post office refuses to deliver to my house at all. They claim it is to remote. I got to drive 15 miles to get it. I only pick it up on days I have other business in town.

I live in a city of about 20k population and my city doesn't have a post office. I've known of some that were shut down, but you're right in that it causes lots of complaints. This little town has never had one, so no one misses it. For me, it's only about 3.5 miles to a post office in another little town, but it's about 8 miles to the post office which delivers my mail.

I used to be a temporary part time mail carrier in the days when we walked up to each door to put the mail in the box beside the door, or through a slot in the door. Then I was a full time clerk in the Dallas post office in the days when the downtown businesses had twice daily mail delivery. And I sold Special Delivery stamps for 30 cents.:laughing: When Special Delivery mail came in, a carrier drove out to deliver it right then, even late at night, weekends, holidays, etc. And we kept a window open to sell stamps, take parcels in, etc. until 10 p.m. at the one post office in which I worked. Yep, times have sure changed.:laughing:

I could live without Saturday mail delivery although this would make it 3 days in a row without mail on all those weeks with Mondays that they are closed.

But would the mailmen who are used to getting 40 hours pay plus 8 hours of time and a half overtime on Saturdays agree to a 23% pay cut? Or would their pay just be increased to compensate them for not working Saturdays which would save us nothing?

The 2 closest post offices to my house are 3 miles and 8 miles away in small towns and are closed on Saturdays. If I need the services of a post office on Saturday I must drive a 22 mile round trip and wait in line at least a half hour because only one of the 4 registers in the post office is open and then only until noon.

That said, I still think that the USPS is the greatest mail delivery system in the world.

And therein lies one of the problems... people thinking you are taking away their pay when you stop overtime.

With people not mailing bills or even receiving bills in the mail as well as the magazines dieing out I really don't see how we will get mail six days a week.

I pay as many bills online as possible since it is faster and it saves money. I am lucky in that we have a post office that I drive by so I just dropped the mail in the box instead of leaving it in the mailbox at home. I only pay by mail for those one off type of bills. I would guess we pay 20 or so bills every money at a minimum. At almost 50 cents a stamp that is $10 a month!

Delivery six days a week will have to go away to save money and I would not be surprised if it went to four days a week, Tuesday to Friday.

Saturdays is when I get my neighbors mail and he gets mine. Different mail carrier on Saturday. I wouldn't miss it either.

Heck, I'd be in favor of Mon, Wed, Fri delivery. We only get 4 bills a month, some insurance correspondences, lots of college promos for my oldest kid, and the rest is solicitations. When we go on vacation we just go to the post office and fill out the little form to hold it until X date and then they deliver it all at once when we return. It has never failed.

Most packages come UPS or Fed-X and they are delivered to the back door or held at the respective offices for pick up.

Ironically I read some were that UPS or Fed-X was considering using the USPS to deliver some of their packages.

It's already being done where I live. The mail carrier drops off both FedEx and UPS packages.

I could do without it also.Id be willing to not have it delivered. But I dont think it will help much overall. The system is to flawed to recover. They make all kinds of changes that are to late to make a difference.
And the rules etc . are just not customer friendly.
