Being a government (city) employee, we weren't going to get anything much from the city. In the police department, officers were periodically asked to donate to a fund that paid for the retirement plaques, as the one you see below. It was also kind of customary, when someone was about to retire, for someone in that division to send a memo to all divisions with the information, date, time, and location of a retirement party, and the name of the person they could contact, if they wished to donate toward a retirement gift. I gave orders that there was to be no retirement party and no one was to be asked to donate toward a retirement gift. A lieutenant who worked for me came a couple of weeks before I retired to tell me, "You know the City does provide $25 toward a cake and coffee for a retirement party, and you should at least allow folks in our division to have the cake and coffee", so I agreed to that.
Well, it came time to go to a meeting room where the female members of my division were supposedly setting up the cake and coffee, and lo and behold, someone had gone after my wife and daughters, there was a crowd there from the police department as well as the city manager's office. In addition to the plaque, the clock was given to me by a cousin who had retired before me (and was made by a retired officer), and there was also a nice complete set of golf clubs, bag, and all the necessary accessories.
