Incorrect, FEDERAL is any vehicle with a towed unit that is over 10K that crosses state lines OR a 26,001 GVW (license, rated, actual) unit with or w/o towed unit.

Laws very by STATE that may say the total GVW of both needs to be over 26K, I know MN is this way, but Federal is anything in commerce with a towed unit over 10K crossing state lines.

One of the trucks is registered to my wifes business. The other is primarily used for maintaining and rehabbing investment properties. This truck is only driven by me. I am not exactly sure if that truck is "commercial" or not.

Trailers are pulled by both trucks for personally owned rental/rehab properties. The trucks are not driven by employees.

When you pull trailer for rehabbing rentals you are technically a CMV. The odds that you ever get busted for this are slim to none if you don't mind fibbing a bit if you get pulled over. It also make no difference if it is owner operated or employee operated.

I wonder if the guy hauling personal tools to jobsites would be considered a cmv?

Then it would be kind of moot anyway since he would need a CDL.

Simply put if I haul "my" tools as a self employed contractor in a truck or combo over 10k GVWR/CGVWR/GVW it is a CMV.

If I haul my tools as an employee of someone else it would not be.

That is what bothers me about it. The guy that has a 1 Ton truck for pulling his weekend toys. Or the finish carpenter that pulls a trailer because he prefers his own tools.

That being said, I have also been in some pretty scary under 26,000 lb company trucks.
