Ripper without box blade

Actually I may just go that route. I was wondering how far to space them. For just tearing soil up, they can be relatively far apart. However I was considering making multiple passes as I have a 2816 hst mahindra only. But to make multiple passes at deeper passes each time but with tines spaced closely to pull up rock from the soil. The field hasnt been worked in maybe 60 years. And much rock in the soil. I would like to get the rock out and figured if I used this set up with closely spaced scarifiers, I could pull out the rock . Any ideas...?

I notice your scarifiers are mounted a little distance back from the end of the 3pt arms or rear of the tractor. Is there any benifit to this? Would mounting the shank holder just behind the wheels make it less workable?

None that I can think of, I picked that distance because it was the same, or close to, the distance on my backblade. I figured it worked for that so why re-invent the wheel

Wouldn't like to say if there'd be a benefit or a hindrance, someone else is going to have to chime in.

Saying that, I modified mine to today. It was a pain, albeit a minor one, when after I had broke up the ground I had to put the rake or backblade on. I mounted an ice blade from a grader on hinges so I can lift it up out of the way when I want to do a bit of levelling, works good. The blade is 3/4" x 7" x 5'

I made a ratchet rake as well but I was'nt impressed by that. I didn't like the fact that you didn't have much steering control because you had to use a fair bit of down pressure to dig into the roots. It did work but just not as well as expected.

Oh yeah, looks good. Do you think if the scarifiers were placed close together, say 6 or 8 inchs apartment, they would work in uprooting rocks to leave a field relatively rock free if enough passes were made. And to a depth of say 12 or 16 inches for good tilling while preparing for gardening?

I do but you have to consider the amount of available HP as well as traction to the ground. Mine's a 20HP 4WD Jinma but it's got enough power to do most anything I'll want but if it gets up against a big stump I've got to start at the sides and work my way in. Same with traction, it'll spin 3 wheels (back locked and one of the front) in lose soil....Mike

I get that. I know Im quite limited on horsepower, its why I would definently expect multiple passes. I'm mostly interested in the idea of coming up agains football size rocks and pulling them up and out of the top 16 inches of soil in what was once an old hay field. Then I can work the field easy with a tiller or what ever. I would figure with enough passes at a couple extra inches each pass I would eventually have pulled up most of the rock that couldnt fit between the spacing between the shanks should I build one.
