Ripper without box blade

It will be eually handy in finding phone lines to lol. Its amazing on how much a scarifier will make the ground work faster. One job I was an operator on we had a little 943 Cat track loader It was a good machine but I was set diggin a sun baked red clay haul road out. It ad been used over a year to run 30 ton offroad trucks on. I had to dig it from the top down. The toothed bucket would dig it but not great. I put the scarifiers down and made about 5 passes then could dip it out with the bucket.


Used the same kind on a smalled Kubota tractor the other day and it was a big help.

I really like using my ripper in gardens before I till them. It really helps get the tiller dig deeper and fluff the soil better. I need to re-build my home-made ripper more like the OP. I didn't put enough re-inforcement in it and it resembles a pretzel now.

power trac, tractors come to mind. were all implements are on the front, same with skid steer implements.

I don't know enough about niche market tractors like Power-Tracks to comment. Most skidsteers I see in use around here have buckets for digging/loading, or forks for lifting. I don't see any of them doing deep scarifier work.

use of tooth bars and teeth on buckets, to graple buckets, to forks on the FELs. and doing same thing. why would rippers/scarficers. make a difference?

FEL bucket teeth generally dig in and curl back to break up the dirt. One generally doesn't travel very far forward at any one time with this operation. Those who use forks in a similar manner are generally grubbing something out of the ground (e.g. stump or rock). Grapples are meant to grab things (e.g. brush, above ground rocks & stumps, etc), and I can't picture most people using them for ground engaging work.

Scarifiers are generally meant to break up the soil via continuous pulling through the dirt, not intermittently like a FEL toothbar equipped bucket.

Look at a backhoe, the hoe pulls to excavate, not pushes. Look at a woodworker's spokeshave knife, it is pulled...not pushed. The same for utility knives...and so on.


if that was the thing, i surely would be seeing a lot more FEL twisting threads. and tractors over the years just on this farm let alone all the other farmers around me, would be replacing loader arms all the time.

I suspect that's because not many people are using their loaders with ripper teeth on them.

I know I would enjoy seeing such a device being used successfully without damaging the FEL. A lot of making something like that even remotely possible is going to be the scarifier tooth's geometry being adapted for a pushing operation instead of a pulling one.

Well as per my first post about K.I.S.S. and about removing FEL . We have had our tractor for 9+ years and although it is a quick release FEL , I have never tried . Why ??? Cause more than likely , I would be posting pictures here asking for help on how to put it back on .:laughing:

All the steel was used / recycled from local scrap yard , except for a little of the basic structure that had been the original pull disk .

Phones lines ??? Give me a shovel , a man powered post hole digger , our back hoe , etc...... , and I can find our local phone companies line . I have cut ours several times in the driveway , have found but not cut in field putting in a post and cut about a foot out of neighbors while redoing my corner posts of field fence . Average depth is like 18" . It was all contracted out to a private company so since it usually is never the required depth , ( 36" ??? ) , it is always repaired for free .

As stated by others , ripping it first , then second passing with 3 point kk disk really works up nice so it saves time .

You're lucky to have your Telco bury their lines that deep. On the residential lots where I live, it's anywhere from 2" - 6" depending on how quickly Jose wants to get it done with the cable pulling machine so he can get his cerveza. The same goes for Comcrap's CATV lines.

Cannot let others see my welding or maybe my attempt's at welding .

Although so far it has stayed together even when pulling up that concrete culvert . My reason for going this route was I have a blade , so I seen no since in getting a box scraper just to use the scarifiers .

Being a truck owner / driver , I try to K.I.S.S. , ( Keep it Simple Stupid . Stupid meaning " Me" ) , thus I like to use my disk rather than my brush hog . Disking is a " No Brainer " type action , just don't run into anything with the tractor . While mowing requires a thought process , which I some times come up short on . Picture below is a section of the back skirt on my brush hog that I had to cut out and replace when my neighbor backed into a tree while mowing , ( Seriously , Was not me that time !! ) .

Not to sidetrack your ripper post, but I was wondering, if you really do try to K.I.S.S, then why didn't you just take a piece of solid steel or railroad track or some other piece to act as an anvil and use a hammer to pound the gashed hole back into place, and then run a single bead down the hole? Seems like a lot easier than removing and replacing a piece the size that you cut out.
Or maybe you just wanted to practice your welding skills on the larger piece????

Tried beating it back down but it required two people . One to hold the railroad iron as a anvil then other to swing the sledge . Now , since I go elk hunting . I really value my hearing and even with plugs in my ears and my shooting muffs on , it was EXTREMELY LOUD under that brush hog when my neighbor hit it with the sledge just 1 time . That and the fact that his AIM did not seem to be to good with that first shot made me skeptical of that idea .

He wanted to try and hold the rail iron , but I had some thin plate steel laying here anyway , so rather than hassle with beating our brains out or wasting oxy/acet heating it first , I just took a grinder with cut-off wheel and sliced out the bent and damage area and replaced . Thus " KISS " came into play by simply not over thinking my objective .:thumbsup:

P.S. Were I empty the leaves at up behind our pool , I would not really call it a compost pile , more like a " Burn " pile . Big pile of leaves , a fuse flare and pile all gone ..

Where can I get a good deal on scarifiers. A local tractor dealer he has them for 53 or 58 dollars. 2' long by 3/4" by 2.5 " . I'm from easter canada.

Did you ever consider getting some 3/4 x 2 1/2" or 3" flatbar from a local steel supplier.
I used 1 3/8" diameter stressproof when I made mine, The roots and rocks I pulled are unreal, the only limitation I've come up with so far is horsepower and the occasional lack of traction, some pics:
