Road Grader

What is the best size and brand of Road Grader/Scraper to recondition a hard packed limestone rock road. My tractor is 65 HP so I feel I could pull a 6 -7 footer no problem. The road is about 1500' long and 8-9 ft wide (more or less). I'd like to keep the price reasonable so no hydraulics.

If it is really hard packed, you may need to consider a traditional box blade with scarifiers to rip up the hard pan. I would say 7-8 ft width would be a good match. My opinion...

I have a regular box blade with scarifiers. I could pull that across a few times in the worst areas as prep. Those look like good blades. I saw a video on youtube of its use and it looks like the real deal. I was hoping to keep in under a grand. Maybe wishful thinking for a new one. Maybe I can find a used one.

There are several brands that you could look at that might get you closer to you budget, and maybe even find something local to save on shipping. Some of the manufacturers I am aware of that makes the land leveling blades are King Kutter, Tuffline, Dirt Dog, Tarter, and ETA. Hope this helps.

I've got a 4 footer that I pull behind my BX, maintain about 400' worth of gravel drives... I use it 2-3 times a year to re-float the gravel and fill in the low spots that develop. A 6' one will work just fine in your situation, you'll have to run multiple passes to initially break up the hardpan, but once you've gotten it "fluffy", then a pass or two a couple of times a year will keep everything smooth.

Having both a box and plane, I've learned that you use the box to move material from point A to B and use the plane to smooth everything out afterwards and blend it in... I'd run the plane a couple of passes and evaluate how well it's working before I'd make a pass with the box scarifiers down.

you want a 7' minimum preferably 8' with that size tractor.. if not you won't be able to even scrape the width of your tractor.

I would suggest the Land Pride GS2584 or GS2596. Like already stated I think you should at least cover the width of your tires.
They weigh in at about 800 and 850 pounds respectively and have scariff teeth
I have a GS1572 on a 45 hp tractor and love it.

I have a Befco -- very nice 7 footer. It has scarifiers, but I don't use them often.

I have a mile long gravel driveway that, for years, just laughed at my rear blade. So I got a bigger tractor and a Land Pride GS2584 with manual scarifiers. HA - two passes each way with the scarifiers down loosened the top and two more passes had it just like it was in the beginning. My driveway will, after spring thaw, set up just like concrete. I also use the GS2584 to create new trails out across my property. With the scarifiers down it will rip out anything smaller than 2 1/2" ponderosa pines - sage brush doesn't stand a chance.

We bought the Woods GSM84P with scarifiers. Tractor is an LS XR4046HC so, 46 HP. The LS pulls it well and will be even better once I get my new Top N' Tilt Cylinders from Brian at Fit-Rite.

I highly recommend getting one with scarifiers, they really bust up hard packed gravel well. I last used the grader with only two middle scarifiers down to see if I could tear up the grass in middle of our long driveway. So far, so good but will have to wait until spring to see how successful I was.

As TEG noted we use the Delta Hook on all out CAT 1 implements. Started with them in 2006. Really fast to hook up and unhook. The only time I have to get off tractor is to hook up PTO. I know they are more expensive but they work really well, even on non-quick hitch compatible implements.

J and I Manufacturing in Madill, Oklahoma has the best prices I ever saw for 3 point graders. They manufacture 5' to 9' graders. I drove down and purchased a 5' grader a couple of years ago. Well worth the drive.
