Thanks for posting, John. That looks like it would do the business except I can't quite make out what holds the rock in place.
Making my own would give me the excuse I need to go get a welder and a metal chop saw. I've also no welding skills, except a one day course I attended about 25 years ago when I lived in the Scottish borders. The local sheep shearer gave welding courses outwith sheep shearing season to make ends meet. They were paid for by the Ministry of Agricutlure and were free to farmers provided there were three or more on the course. I spent a day at a friends farm learning the rudiments of how to use an arc welder. I haven't touched a welding wand since and doubt I've retained much of what I was taught.

Heyya Jim, just curious, wondering why you have ruled out thumbing your rocks into your dump trailer then dumping them where you can thumb them into place for the wall. I'm just putting mine in a big pile and hauled a dozen or so last time I had a rock picking day. Worked good. Just wondering.

Where about in the borders were you? I was born in Galashiels and lived in Earlston/Kelso area until we immigrated to Aus. Been back a few times since , beautiful part of the world.

Brew......The problem is the dump trailer...don't know how I'd move it after it's loaded. The terrain I have to deal with is soft and variable; don't have the road completed yet for easy travel.
Dump trailer will be used when the road base is further along. I've tried to use it and the ground is just too soft for the weight right now. I do need a thumb for sure....prob end up with the static kind. -Maybe I need to rethink the order of events on the property here.

I lived on an old farm I bought off the Buccleuch estate in 1981, a place called the Mount between Skirling and Blyth Bridge. I liked it there, quiet and beautiful and only a spit and a stride to good fly fishing on both the Clyde and the Tweed. I thrashed the water often (mostly in vain) at my favourite spot, Rachan on the upper Tweed. I do get homesick for it sometimes.

The problem I would have with the ‘rock tong’ idea is that it will take two people to operate. Even if the jaws would close and grab a rock, I’m not convinced yet, someone is going to have to help swing/rotate it when it is being placed. Not sure I want someone that close to that large of rock if something was to happen and help is rare around here.
