Rodents & Vehicles

I was at a boy scout camp, in bed under my mosqitto net, and had mice run across my chest. We were lucky to have mice, the spots without mice had snakes.
My uncle was a veteran of many hunting camps. He learned to put crackers and peanut butter on the floor if he was just staying for a night or two, so the mice would stay on the floor instead of in the beds.

Yep... had repeated problems with the Dozer and mice... the dryer sheets seemed to help.

At the ranch... very aggressive measures... assorted traps and deterrents have helped.

Interestingly the equipment shed seems to get the least of it... maybe be open and all... the shop and a guest with a camper had really problems.

The best place without problems for tack has been in the horse trailer tack compartment... 5 years and no issues.

Seems I'm not the only one to find that an open hood discourages rodents. I stuffed around a dozen Costco dryer sheets in a Crown Royal purple sack and hung it on the underside of my Jeep hood. Sure smells good - the rats seemed to like it also. Open hood on the Jeep has completely eliminated rats. Same with my F-150 pickup.

The rats are still close in and around the outbuilding and house. They just aren't in the vehicles any more and I'm slowly but surely trapping them.

PVC Bait Station.jpg

I made 4 of these and set them outside of my woodpile. Mice or chippys are suppose to crawl in and eat and when a bait chunk is gone one drops down in it's place. I used 2" PVC pipe and poison seems to go slowly. Something is eating them.

For the previous three years I used poison baits. No pets at that time. They always disappeared and very little evidence of mice. Now I have an 8 month old Chocolate Lab - EVERYTHING goes in his mouth - if just for a taste. This mornings check of the "trap line" indicates no action last night. Actually no evidence of rats anywhere this morning. Maybe they have retreated back into the woods - - ha, ha, ha. I have a feeling its gonna be like Arnold said - "I'll be bock".

It's like this with gophers for me... they literally took over the neighborhood after years on battling maybe a single one per year...

I think having a Siberian Husky helped too because he was a hunter... wouldn't move from his spot...

No dogs right now so I am back to bait.

Don't TALK to me about pocket gophers. What was - last year - my side lawn - now looks like a practice area for the US Army, Light Infantry, Mortar Brigade. In previous years I have trapped the PGs. Two years ago - I trapped 87 and could see absolutely no difference - what-so-ever - in my side yard. Its part of being out here in the REAL TRUE country - you trap and dispatch one - there are two, waiting their turn, right out there in the Buck brush. They draw straws - short straw - HEY, come on down!!!

Yep... with acres of open space abutting Mom's place and only a cyclone fence... the little guys come and go as they please...

Looking back... having a dog that loves to hunt did a lot to keep the undocumented gophers in check.

Ultrarunner - I could not agree more - - its those dam undocumented ones that raise all the havoc. Dirt wars that escalate into sod-wad throwing wars - and all this time I'm doin my best to maintain a lawn.
