We have a a property & the area I need to mow / grade /work etc etc maybe 20-25+deg slopes. A portion of it I have mowed with a small old kubota rideon that I fitted with "snowchains" for grip. Mowing up & down slope is OK, but obviously need to turn around....in places the inside wheels lift of the ground and it has trouble slowing when going down hill if slippery or dry grass is present, basically I feel I'm "on the edge". I'm now looking at buying a "proper" tractor with tractor tyres etc but I'm concerned about the slopes. I guess for legal reasons, no manufacturer seems to quote the COG or roll over angles for their equip. While I'm aware there are many many variables here, I'm trying to work out if it is a life risk to buy a tractor, or if I should buy a walk behind. What sort of slopes can be worked with a tractor in relative safety (with out brave pills). What do all the "hill side" farmers use, donkeys? Anyone know any www sites that have COG locations for various brands of tractor? Do the Italian Ferrari tractors do an better than a ford or similar on a slope?
Many thx in advance for any constructive input.

Jeff-

Welcome to the forum. You might check out the Power Trac machines at this link:
Power-Trac

They make some machines specifically designed for mowing on slopes steeper than most CUTs can handle safely. Most of what I have seen recommends not sidehilling on more than 15 degree slopes. For me, the pucker factor kicks in before that /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.

The Power Trac machines also have a lot of attachments available that equal or parallel the attachments you can get for CUTs (loaders, mowers, etc.) There is also a Power Trac forum here on TBN where you can read what the current owners think of them. Good Luck.

Jeff,

I had similar questions in my search for the "right" tractor for our place. I have found TBN and the folks here incredibly helpful in sorting it all out.

If you have the time and don't mind sifting through some friendly banter and debate amoungst/between the veterans, you might read the thread "Best Mountain Tractor". I don't know how to link it, but you can fairly easily find it by looking under Buying/Pricing and clicking "views" on the title bar so the most widely read threads will sort to show up first.

Good luck, enjoy your research and above all, be safe.....oh, and by the way, be advised that asking questions about HST vs. Gear may yield you far more than an ear (eye) full!!!/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

How do you guys do that link thing....I located the thread and right clicked to copy the shortcut, but the best I could do was then paste the whole (long, not short)-cut. What else do I need to do?

Doug,

You'll probably feel the same way I felt once I figured out how to post pictures! It's easy.

Once you copy the address, in your Best Mountain Tractor thread its http://www.tractorbynet.com/cgi-bin/compact/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=genbuy&Number=123879&page=&view=&sb=&o=&vc=1, then you paste it into the message that you want to include it with. Next, add what you see in red .

That's all there is to it.

Doug,

I left out a right end bracket -
] - at the end of the address and before the title. I tried going back and correcting it, but everything gets all screwed up. So just make sure that there is a right end bracket at the end of the address, and it'll work.

Sorry!

You left out the ] between the URL and the title.
