In order to do that though, that curved grader blade digs deep and is angled to the side. This and the speed of travel sets up a wave like curl that pulls up fines and gravel alike. This dosn't go over the blade and can't go under so it is angled and leaves a windrow off to the side. A second pass is used to take that windrow of mixed material with a slightly higher blade setting to allow material to pass under and be re-distributed evenly over the roadway. Unless the movement is really agressive, like the curl setup by a curved blade, any movement is going to tend to separate the fines to the bottom. I don't think mine digs deep enough to pull up a lot of the really deep settled material.

Let me try this link again, please. http://www.mri.psu.edu/centers/cdgrs/resources/tech_bulletins/grading_with_carbide_blade.pdf

As I read this bulletin, the curved grader blade on a road grader remixes the fines with the rock in a gravel road.

Does having two straight blades on Ronmar's grader accomplish roughly the same thing?

I saw a picture showing how the straight bladed , two blade grader, like Ron's mixes materrial. It "percolates" material as it builds up between the two blades. This percolation action is what causes the fines the sift to the bottom and the larger stones to "float" on top.

the short answer is, yes, the two bladed grader with the straight blades does cause the material to separate.

As Ronmar has pointed out, a large road grader is just able to dig a lot deeper, bringing more material to the top to mix-up.

I may have to build one for my property. we shal see if i can get a dry hydrent going if not ill build one like this with a v blade and a pair of trenching blades on the outside. have it specifically measured for my drive. I just drive down the middle and get a crown and drain ditches all in 1 pass :D

Nice work Ron
After seeing your build I decided to make my own based on your design. I wanted to say thanks for the idea and doing some of the RnD.
I had all the steel I needed left over form other jobs and scrap I ve collected. I think that mine is heaver than the one you built, based on the thickness of the channel and box tub. witch helps keep from skipping over rocks.
The grader works well, after two passes it looks like I had top dressed the drive way with new gravel. All the weeds and grass has been ripped out roots and all. The bumps and wash bored are gone.
I'm planning to make some changes. The blade needs to be moved back because it sometimes get clogged with grass and weeds. I'm going to add a set of (4) tins that I can adjustable the height on the front cross bar. With the tins down I'll be able to us the grader to brake up and loosen deeper into the road base and our riding arena. I think they will give me more versatility, like a box scraper.

Thanks again for the idea

Stephen
hope the photos come out
