When did ROPS become LAW(can't sell without 'em). Weren't most manufacturers selling the tractors with them before they "HAD" to? I guess I'm looking for the history of ROPS .
TIA

I don't know when. I did hear that they are required on 23HP tractors and up, that is why you don't see 23HP tractors and up at Sears, and other large retailers. Don't know if that's true or not. Anyone else know?

moss road, when i asked chris at power trac, why the rops? he informed me that the state of virginia requires every thing with 25 hps and above was required to have the safety device installed. could it be that the states first started this requirement?

i will do some more digging, and not with the pt425 hahahahah

I think it has something to do with the difference between lawn/garden tractors and compact, sub-compact tractors. Weight, width, end use etc. I think alot is voluntary. It does make you wonder though....4 wheelers don't have ROPS and alot of people have been killed, hurt seriously on them.

I TRIED OSHA"S site, and they have more rules for all kinds of eqpt. that they require rops to be on,covering tractors, loaders, graders, dozers etc, etc. but think those rules may be for occupational safety rules.probably not for reg. tractors.it got so complicated ,i still can't figure out what the heck needs a rops./w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif

frank, thank you for the comeback. i have flipped more things in my sixty years, and won't buy another thing without rops. kubota, just made me an offer for my z21d zero turn diesel 60 inch mower a reduced price, for their rops. i ordered it right away.

some manufacturer are offering rops which you can collapse to go into enclosed trailers or under trees. have a question into kubota if theirs can be collabsed for the above reasons
