That's a fact but bear in mind all bottled oil was bulk at some point.

I'm just speaking from my experience with my employer, we have a 5000 gallon oil tank outside, we go thru that amount in about 2 months.

had some of it tested more than once, and it isn't exactly what it was claimed to be, and that was the explanation.

sounds reasonable too.

In the past we had trouble with Premium Blue that we bought in bulk, Cummins insisted we use that brand etc.. so we were using it.

Used Oil analysis always came back with a TBN of around 1, which is bad. had some failures etc.. apparently what came in bottles didn't necessarily come in the tanker.

Ok, what other brands should I consider? I was looking at the mobil 1 synthetic for diesels last night at wally world. It's certainly not the cheapest stuff around. So other recommendation are appreciated.

I hate to sound like I'm starting an oil war here.... You may do just fine with Rotella, Dello, Mobil1,Quaker State, or whatever else you can get ahold of.... Just make sure it has an API rating that matches what your truck requires.... The pre '07 emissioned trucks(<'08 Ford PSD) are fine with a CI-4 oil. If you have a 6.4L PSD, you need CJ-4.. As long as your oil matches these ratings(CJ-4 is backward compatible too), you'll likely be ok.. Just rememebr the what if recomendations in my prior post before you spend alot of money trying to fix a problem that may be caused by the oil..

My main question was in regards to why one would feel it necessary to stray from the MFG's brand of oil, that seems to be the first thing some guys like to change, as if it isnt good enough.. I added my experience with Rotella has not been all that stellar. It is a relatively cheap oil that can be had in bulk. To each his own I guess, but I would just buy the Motorcraft, I believe the price is comparible.. Sorry to turn it into a big deal.. I believe sometimes we make too big of a deal about "what oil is best".. In my years at the dealer, and helping my buddie at his independant shop, I have come to the realization that you are typically safer sticking with OEM parts and fluids as a general rule.. The hydraulic dependancy of the PSD makes the oil package pretty important. Ford makes sure the Motorcraft oil they package(whoever it comes from) meets their requirements for their engine..

BTW, in case anyone is wondering ,the oil raiting is "C" for compression ignition, "J" relates alphabeticaly to the level of oil(J being the latest and greatest), "4" stands for 4 stroke.. = CJ4

Just for reference, and as they would say, straight from the horse's mouth.

Look for the Products that Carry the API Quality Marks

And for those that don't like want to read the next step.

http://new.api.org/certifications/engineoil/categories/upload/EngineOilGuide2006.pdf

And in the FWIW category, I had a rather lengthy discussion with my Shell Rotella Distributor about the cost difference between the CI and the CJ, both of which are currently available. I think it was about $40 a drum difference which caused me to take a step back and think a mistake had been made..

So we went with Ursa... :)

The requirements set down by the manufacture..whether it be engine oil OR grease for lubrication are the MINIMUM required for warranty....never the MAXIMUM. If a person cant find a BETTER...that is to say a SUPERIOR product...then they havent bothered to look!

A superior product is exactly what I'm after here. I feel that the better care you take of a machine the longer life it will have. My goal from this post was to accertain a good synthetic motor oil for my 6.0 PSD. I respect the opinions you've all give. With that said I still haven't heard a good recommendation for an oil brand.

Matt,
I wish you the best with your search... I've seen many trucks(6.0L's alone) that have well over 200k one even as high as 565k on dealer bulk or fleet service wich could very well be anything.. The key to longevity is service intervals. No more than 5kmi or 200hrs between oil changes and no more than 15k mi between fuel tilter changes.. Like I said, good luck with your search for the right oil for you.

LOL...Step up to the bar and CHOOSE ONE!...:D Probbaly not more than 5-10 that are better than OEM requirements specify.

Take the specs stated from your owners manual...compare that to "C" type oils "on the shelf"..and pick one that has ratings FAR ABOVE what th engine maker specifys. Its that simple.

If your engine is rated for ..say a "CF" oil..??...and use you ANY BRAND of SYN thats rated.."CI-4"..as an example...your home free.

those standards are not what could be termed minimums, they are specific tests that a lubricant passes to aquire that rating. a particular oil gets a Pass or Fail on the ratings, not a ranking.

I often wonder where someone would look for a superior oil, IMHO every oil manufacturer tells you theirs is the best.

I'm also of the opinion that brand doesn't matter if regular service intervals are maintained.
