I often wonder where someone would look for a superior oil, IMHO every oil manufacturer tells you theirs is the best.

I'm also of the opinion that brand doesn't matter if regular service intervals are maintained.

No one said they were minimum standards...but the standard the MFG quotes is the ?? bottom line...hence the MINIMUM thats allowed for warranty purposes. Some will quote a RANGE of oils...others simply state that the oil has to be AT LEAST a grade (??)...hence its the MINIMUM. (Thusly any oil rated HIGHER "might be considered" a "maximum??"

Oil for my Kubota is to be AT LEAST "CD"..."CE"...or "CF" So guess which one is the MINIMUM grade to be used???.

Sully, sometimes the newest rated oil isn't necessarily as good as the older ones.

case in point would be the anti wear additives that had to be removed or minimized from the lube oil in order for it to satisfy engine manufacturers desire to not foul catalytic mufflers in engines with exhaust after-treatment.

Oh thats certainly true. It DOES take a tiny bit of "research" to see just what is "available" to start with..and what oils in certain "ranges" (CF...CG...etc) even SHOULD be used.

What is that latest spec? CJ..I think??? I dont have anything here I NEED to run that grade in

That would be CJ-4, since its a "4" stroke oil...

The latest spec for the '07 engines is CJ-4. I know that Amsoil had to reduce the additive package some in this rating. The CI-4+ had a TBN package of 12 and the new CJ-4 has a TBN of 8.

Unless you have one of the new motors with particulate traps, there is no use of going to the newer rating oils. Even a new tractor engine doesn't need CJ-4. Only the emissions engines for on the road.

The primary use of these new oils is to keep the soot, which is one of the main problems with new emission engines, in suspension better. Acids seems to be a problem as well.

Forget the new ratings and go with what you have been using. The only move up I would make is synthetic over mineral oil. If not making that move, stick with a good CI-4 or CI-4+ oil.

As mentioned, the CJ-4 is lower in sulfated ash to help reduce soot production from normal blowby... So, if we think about this a bit:rolleyes: .. What problems are we hearing about in the EGR equipped engines?? Carbon and soot deposits in the intake and EGR,correct??All deisels have this problem, we just see it more so in the EGR engines.. IMO, this new oil is a good idea for anyone since it is backward compatible and I see no reason not to use it......It also seems to have more lubricity, though I have no data to support that...

it has been my experience that the biggest problem we encountered was sludge buildup in the oil, due to soot loading.

intake has been fairly clean , only seen a couple EGR coolers clogged.

Its been just the other way around for us, but they are a different class/use of truck too.. That might make a difference..
