Rounded off drain plug

I think all it needs is to grab the plug by the threads with a good pipe wrench and it will come out.....but lets see how many pages we can get out of this first!

Yes, square head.

Here's the current state of the plug. That bar should be removable, bolt on each end. The loader mounts to the frame on the front under the engine and to axle on the rear, just a support bar I suppose. Johnkn, I've tried those extractors as well, although the one I tried was the one that fit in it's current state. Once I remove the bar I'll look into using the next size down, 1/2". Bolt head would normally be 9/16"

With the bar removed would this tool be an option perhaps?

I have seen it used on tight studs that had not be removed in over 50 years with success.

I can't imagine why that didn't work, as a test, in a vise, I was able to snap a 1/2 bolt off with a 4 foot pipe wrench.. so... anyway, a drain plug just needs to be made snug, making it this tight is just not right, and not needed.. a bit of Teflon tape, or pipe dope could have been used if he had a leak.. or just spend a buck for a new pipe plug!..

I'll attest to that. I've used this tool to remove head bolt and manifold studs - for as far back as 50 years!

It's all entertaining except to the OP who has to actually solve the problem. Dealing with a steel plug in an alum pan with only a couple inches of clearance because of loader mount hardware.

Then if it is so stuck and inaccessible, would it not be better to drill and tap a new plug?

I have faith in Kando and this this will be successfully resolved. He seems capable but just a little more deliberate than most of us. I'm going with happy ending on this and one day it will be posted as resolved.
