Rounded off drain plug

My guess is that most tractor owners in the US change oil when it's hot and the hotter the better.

What shape plugs do most tractors have - tapered or straight?

Most modern tractors are straight thread with o ring or washers of some sort to seal. Some still have a few tapered plugs here and there. Most gear boxes still use taper threads, and as you said , just need to know how tight is tight when servicing them, no need to have them gorilla tight. I usually drain my oils when the unit has set a while and oil has drained down and settled, just my preference.

this is the only thing that should be used on a square drive drain plug. Cheap 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" Square Box Wrenches photo8.jpg using vise grips, pliers, or pipe wrenches, or even open ended wrenches will eventually round off the square nut..

They also have socket sets for square plugs.

I also have several 8 point sockets for square plugs too. Most tool brands have them.

I would not recommend 8 point sockets for square plugs, as they would have less contact points, and could strip the plug if a lot of pressure is needed to remove it.. Thanks for the link to the four point sockets though, they are very difficult to find at a decent price!..

I've learned something today. If I ever ran across a square drive plug, I think a 3/8, 1/2, or 3/4 inch drive extension fit and I hoped they were all like that.

They work just fine, just have to be smarter than the tools your working with.

Thank you for the heads up. I had no idea and sure could use that set.

Your welcome, they are handy for sure. There are several different brands and price ranges , just have to search around and find what you like.

Not sure what that’s supposed to mean. Pretty simple fact that a 4 point head in a 4 point socket takes more before it strips vs 8 point. Let me guess. A 12 point works just as good as 6 point it’s just operator error?
