Dargo, I do not want to create argument, or hard feelings on here. On several occasions, I have posted some things in the interest of trying to either help or inform. Each time I have been taken to task for that. Always, no confirmation just assertions. On one particular occasion a member asked if he "changed his oil from, I believe it was, a gas engine oil, he had used in his tractor, to Rotella T, if he had hurt his engine, I said no, and he did not. I have never declared one oil to be better than the rest. Of course most do know that there are better oils, to which I agree. My contention is if it meets manufactuer specs, and API specs, then it may be used. I graduated from two different technical schools and hold a BS degree in automotive technology, and 40 years of experience. I know this makes me a novice, and I would be the first to tell anyone I DON'T know it all. And some of my training is now dated, as I have been retired for several years.
I don't mind criticism, and no one should, as long as it is constructive. I enjoy this forum and really appreciate some of the things you, as well as others, have said on here. However, for some strange reason it seems someone really wants to take someone to task over oils. It may well be a Freudianism has taken over here. I can feel it myself when the cartel wants to raise prices LOL.

That's like asking who makes the best diesel truck: Ford, GM, or Dodge? You will get people who will swear up and down that one is "better" than the other when the truth is that if one was better than the others it would be quantifiable and no one would buy anything else.

Same with oils. There are only opinions. Once a product reaches a certain quality level, be it trucks, oil or whatever, the superiority of one over the others is more in the eye of the beholder than anything else.

TrippleT, if I came across as appearing to be critical of you, that was honestly not my intention by any means. Not even a little. I was just saying that I doubt that people with lab result oil tests will post them here. I know I won't. The tests tell me what I needed to know, but maybe not what someone else wants to hear. So, I opt to just keep them to myself to avoid friction (get it, oil, friction...:)).

that is about the most truthful statement you will ever read on this subject.

I always wanted someone to define the term "better" in reference to motor oil in light of the fact that "good enough" is all most people need.

I work in a large fleet, I don't even know what kind of oil we are buying
( they put it in a big tank after it comes out of a tanker) but one thing I know is it is the cheapest they can buy ( low bid wins in government service LOL) that is rated at the spec required by whatever the newest vehicle we operate requires, and it seems to work.

I generally buy the name brands but don't go upscale. that method has worked for me for since I started driving quite some time ago..

you'll find plenty of peeps who swear by what I term the boutique brands, ie.. specialty lubes that are only available at select outlets . those people don't object to price and are willing to pay more for what they believe is superior product. why argue????, the expensive stuff works too.

anecdotal evidence leads me to suspect that brand or dino versus synthetic arguments and comparisons are meaningless and the only thing that matters in the long run is changing oil on a regular basis along with the filter.

its possible to go to the extreme and do oil analysis and use them to extend your drain intervals if you use a very good lube oil,but that method is probably out of the question for the average operator who is best served by following the manufacturers recommendations.

Thanks Dargo, and I do appreciate what you have said, as well as others. Let us all be friends on a wonderful, educational, informative forum. Bless all of you. And each must decide for themselves in the finality what they wish to do. OH on Bob the oil guy I have that in my bookmarks here.

It is time for the 50 hour service on my 3520 John Deere, my intent was to use Mobile 1, 5W-40, as I want a full synthetic; unfortunately it is no longer available locally. Our Wal-Mart stocked it at one time but has since changed to a 5W-30 SUV which is not suitable for a diesel. Royal Purple 15W-40 is readily available in our NAPA and O’Rileys however I know nothing about this oil. Have any of you ever used this oil, pros/cons?

The poster was looking for Mobil one before the RP!!!

Don't mind me. That's what I get for not rereading the first post. :)
