Guys, thanks for all the input on this subject, I probably should have given you more information. I only use the tractor about 50 to 70 hours yearly, thus I only change the oil each fall, as price is not a concern, I wanted one of the best oils on the market. My initial intent was to use Mobile 1 5W-40, but as stated it is no longer available locally, whereas the Royal Purple is stocked by NAPA and O’Rileys, but I have never used Royal Purple nor do I know anyone who has.

Now, why do I want a synthetic, after working around jet aircraft for 40+ years and that is all we ever used, and knowing the stress placed on these engines, it has to be good stuff! In all these years, I never saw an engine failure due to lubrication, seen plenty of turbine failures due to fatigue but not one lubrication failure. Bottom line, I want the best oil I can get “consistently”, if it cost a few dollars more per oil change, so-be-it!

By the way, I purchased the Royal Purple based on the input by Diesel Power, the engine seems to like it, this is not scientific but the engine seems to run quitter.

Love this board, you folks are fantastic! Wish each a Very Merry Christmas!!

YES!
As far as "cold weather starting" go's a "5W oil is a 5W oil"!..EITHER should allow an engine to start just as easily. ( used as an example of course)

Your kidding, right? Most dino oil has a realistic pour point of about -15 f., Redline (as an example) is -49f.

OldMan - You and your tractor won't be sorry you chose Royal Purple. Top quality with a great reputation.

Before everyone starts beating him over the head for using a synthetic when he is only running 50-70 hours a year. Don't forget, it's his tractor and his money. As he stated he has been around synthetic lubricants before and trust them. Would he have been fine with a dino oil, probably would have been just fine. But the Royal Purple in addition to being synthetic also has a excellent formulation for their additive package. I bet he will even be able to sleep at night now. :)

Ken_CT - Last time I checked Rotella T had a pour point of -40F, Shell Rimula -25F and there are other dino's with fairly good pour points. It all comes down to the base oil stock used and the additive package of any oil, synthetic or conventional. Most industry experts say that within the next 2 to 3 years most good conventional dino oils will perform as well as Group IV and V synthetic's. Technology has come a long way in oil formulations and enginering. It's rather amazing what they can do with a hydrocarbon molecule these day's. And with the leaps and bounds they are having in the nano tech industry I can't even imagine what some of the new additives will be like in a few years. There are already nano size additive manufacturers starting to pop up in the additives industry.

I alway's like to use the example of the apple pie at the fair.

Like most county fairs there is usually a pie contest, usually apple. Everyone that enters the contest has access to the exact same ingredients at the store and basically the same oven to bake it in. But you know what, there is only one Blue Ribbon winner. Why? It's all about the ingredients and how it was made. Just like oil, quality and quantity of additives, quality of base oil and how it is blended together.

but in the end, doesn't it all come down to personal preference???.

when a difference makes no difference, is there a difference?

Merry Xmas everybody.

Do YOU live somewhere that you will be operating YOUR tractor at -49 degrees? If not..then its a MOOT POINT! Syn oil is the greatest thing since sliced bread IF YOU NEED IT. Im not going to be startig MY tractor up at even - 15 degrees!!

I wont beat on him for using it. From what I gather its pretty good stuff ( I cant even buy it here?? no one stocks it for me to even try it??) Here is a question Id like to have answered though..

"By the way, I purchased the Royal Purple based on the input by Diesel Power, the engine seems to like it, this is not scientific but the engine seems to run quietter."

I found EXACTLY the same thing when I switched from a 10W-30 dino to 5w-40 SYN in a Kubota engined genset that I have here. After servicing it and installing the 5W-40...letting ti run about 4-5 minutes all of a sudden you could hear it "quiet down". I sure dont know the decibel amount...but it was definately noticable??

If my local NAPA "stocked" it..I may very well have chosen the same product! "Availability" was one of my main concerns.

Jet engines may not be the best analogy to be applied...after all..how many tractors get good lubrication when they are totally UPSIDE DOWN to boot...lol

Old Man, putting only about 70 hours per year, you could almost run without the oil pan on it. Say, I live about 80 miles north of you. Near Batesville. About two miles east of Mark Martin Ford.
Merry Christmas to all.

I noticed the starting ease after putting in royal purple 5w - 30. To each their own. Run what you like. Just think what would happen if John Deere changed colors of their tractors!!!

Could be as simple as you changed from a 10W-30 to a 5W-40, two different viscosity oils. Or that the synthetic oil you started using has a superior additive package compared to the dino oil you were previously using. Don't forget the top tier oil manufacturers are not just charging you more for a better base oil but for their additive package as well. I know quite a few people that have switched from dino to either a semi-synthetic or full-synthetic over the years and experienced the same results.
