RTV 500 wiring harness under hood

Mine developed the squeak in the steering last fall when the weather turned cold. I got the steering wheel off by loosing the nut and giving it a couple light whaps with a hammer while I pushed on the back of the wheel with my knees. It is a bit of work to get the rubber bushing in and out, but greasing it got rid of the noise and made the steering much easier.

I can't get mine off, Its a has a about a 1/4 inch play after taking the nut off but won't budge. I'm not seeing a rubber bushing of any type. Tried tapping with a hammer, yanking and pulling....no go. I can't see any way to get a spray lube anywhere without removing the steering wheel??

Not sure on the bushing as mine does not squeek but I did get my steering wheel off to align it better with the front wheels.

I loosened the nut so it was flush at the top with the threads then tapped it with a hammer while pulling up on the steering wheel. That worked but took a LOT of tapping. Hope that helps.

Remove the nut and whack the wheel harder....it will come off.

So I attempted this again today. Finally got the steering wheel off and then the rubber bushing wouldn't budge. I was afraid I'd tear it trying to get it off. Still got the squeak...... The squeak sounds like its just below the rubber bushing a couple inches.

If it's that locked up I'd spray some PB Blaster down in there and let it sit a few hours.....do it again and then slap the wheel back on....the stuff works wonders.

Kubota should have put a grease zerk on that location, for sure. Don't know what they were thinking. That bushing is the sole support for the actual steering column. The bottom is attached through a knuckle to the steering box. The alignment is not the best either, nor did Kubota even have the foresight to chrome the shaft at that location to prevent rusting.

I don't know if they put some sort of dry lube on it at the factory, but what happens is that the lube rubs off, the joint drys out, a little rust forms and there you go - squeak squeak. Really, the bushing should have been plastic like acetal which has lubricating properties, and the area on the shaft needed to be non rusting. Without both of these features, this is going to remain a repetitive process.

I don't know how any lube can get past the rubber bushing. Maybe I can get one of those little red straws from the spray can down in there but who knows.

Because there was no grease zerk, I poured in a few cc of gear oil (yes the stinky Sae 80-90 stuff). I noticed that some of it dribbled onto the rubber floor mat, but it has been silent now for about 2 months. I didn't need a puller to get the steering wheel off, it came off easy. Don't waste your time with the spray can stuff, you need something that is going to be persistent. Perhaps that gun lube that they sell that has moly with a propellant might work, because when the solvent evaporates it leaves the moly behind. But unless you prevent the unprotected steel shaft from rusting, you are not going to win.

I could use some Mil-tec but that bushing makes a tight seal, not sure I'm gonna get some down the shaft. I don't want to tear the bushing trying to get it off.

On Mine, the shaft and the bushing/steering column must have been off by at least 5 degrees, so the result is that the rubber bushing is deformed and it does not "seal" as you say. But mine showed no evidence of any kind of lube (oil or grease), which is why i suspected a dry lube as is sometimes applied to O rings.
