On Mine, the shaft and the bushing/steering column must have been off by at least 5 degrees, so the result is that the rubber bushing is deformed and it does not "seal" as you say. But mine showed no evidence of any kind of lube (oil or grease), which is why i suspected a dry lube as is sometimes applied to O rings.
Ah I see. I actually had grease on the exposed shaft when I removed the steering wheel. But the squeak is beneath the bushing so the grease from the factory/dealer is serving no purpose where its currently at, LOL.
