The rubber dust cover on the control lever for my 12LA loader is cracked, so I figured why not pick one up at the dealer's since I had to stop by to pick up oil and filters anyway. 71 freaking dollars is why not! How can they figure that much for a simple rubber boot? I left it on the counter, dealer even recommended that I not buy it at that crazy price. Its just a matter of principle to me, there is no way it costs that kind of money to manufacture and stock a replacement part, especially one that is prone to wearing out.

What it cost to make something only determines the minimum price an item can sell for, not what it will sell for. :(

Wow, that is expensive. I just ordered on for my loader 3 days ago. It was only $11. I was surprised.

Well, this one was covered in dust and it didn't sell!

Its like the time I checked on a set of shoes for my Woods back blade, they were almost as much as the blade, and again the dealer even said not to bother with them. I made a set instead. I'll bet he still has them.

I have always been told that the actual cost to manufacture an item is approximately 25% of the list price.

The rest is tied to marketing, sales, profit margins, etc.

I have no idea about current pricing, but 45-50 years ago my Dad owned an auto parts store. That was before the big discount places you see now. We did sell retail across the counter, but our primary business was selling to garages and car dealers. Of course there was some variation, but on average, the mechanic or dealer who installed parts on vehicles made 40%. As the jobber or wholesaler, we made 15%, and the distributor from whom we got most of our inventory made 3%. I don't know what the manufacturers made.

The fuel tank cap for my TC35DA cost me more than $40 to replace!! I didn't have much choice on whether to purchase that item or not. Even the dealer was astounded at the price.

Kinda makes Armor-All seem cheap doesn't it?

I am constantly astonished at the prices of some "specialty" items for our tractors. Sure, they don't make a bazillion of them like they do for autos, but a simple molded rubber part for $71 sure sounds like exorbitant pricing. Somebody in that supply chain is making a lot of money...or not. Because, you weren't foolish enough to pay their price.:)

This is really pretty basic math. That 71 bucks gives the guy in China making the rubber boot a buck, New Holland gets 35 bucks and the dealer gets another 35 bucks for a total of $71.00
