This is really pretty basic math. That 71 bucks gives the guy in China making the rubber boot a buck, New Holland gets 35 bucks and the dealer gets another 35 bucks for a total of $71.00

As scary as it sounds...you may be right on the money!

Here's a china story for you...A friend was over there and saw 200 chinamen digging a ditch by hand. Right next to the ditch was a brand new Cat that could have done the job in 1/10 of the time it was taking the chinamen.

When he asked why they weren't using the Cat my friend was told that the 200 chinamen were cheaper than the fuel needed to run the Cat.

Kinda makes Armor-All seem cheap doesn't it?

Believe it or not, it gets Armor-All! At some point I'll have to figure something out. It actually started cracking after 2 years, so figure $30 per year to keep things clean and dry at the control lever!

Oh, I do believe it. I was just giving you a razzin'. I remember years ago when I had a sports car with a floor shift, the boot was made of leather with a leather lace drawstring around the top to pull it tight around the shifter arm. A later car had the same arrangement, but it was vinyl. Even later, molded accordian rubber became the choice. I'll bet you that the cost of those items went down, while end price stayed the same or went up. What do you think?;)

When I read SacandagaBrad's original post I started thinking about using Armor-All to protect the joystick boot. Is there any treatment out in the market better than Armor-All to protect against UV and O3 degradation ? Jay

Yes! 303 is far superior to Armorall. In fact I've read where Armorall actually speeds the degradation. I've had boats where the manufacturer specifically said to never, ever use Armorall on the upholstery for that reason. I've owned several plastic kayaks and canoes where 303 was the only treatment recommended.

Yes $71 does sure sound like a lot, but I'll bet the mold to make the form for the boot isn't cheap either.

My father who owns a motor home swears by this stuff:

He says a number of fellow motor home owners use it on all sorts of materials especially their tires because without constant flexing of the sidewall, like as you drive down the road the sidewall will begin to crack. It's the flexing motion, which keeps compounds moving from the inside of the sidewall to the outside, which protects it.

Love my elderly Yanmar. Replica parts to keep it running are downright cheap.

Today on Ebay I see the shift boot for $5.00.

That seller also offers the fuel cap for $6.56, plastic fuel tank $69 and water pump $90. I haven't needed any of those, but a while back I replaced the alternator. $29 for a rebuilt at AutoZone.

These things are well supported with aftermarket parts since there are so many of them all over the world.

For light hobby use this stuff serves me fine.

What I can't figure on parts is why everytime I need something common for my Ford Pickup they have to order it....supposed to be the number 1 selling vehicle in the world but they don't stock parts:confused: Oh they'll have a left handed turboencabulator for a 73 Yugo but won't have a radiator hose for a Ford pickup:cool:

Could you use a CV joint boot or a Hurst shifter boot?
