Runaway Kioti DK 45

Fuel and air being shut off would be only way to shut down a runaway engine if a hydrostat trans. You could fit something to the air cleaner nozzle, to plug it if the engine did runaway that you keep stored behind the seat in case.
It's few and far between that these motors lock the pump rack and run away, but it can and does very infrequently happen.
About the only thing one can do preventativly is to run the cleanest fuel, change the fuel filter frequently, and maybe use a lubricity additive.

Older Detroit diesels ran away so often that they had a built in air shutter that would shut them down hooked to a cable that would actuate them. On our hydrostat units you can rollback the bucket until it stops and hold it, then apply the hydrostat pedal all the way down with the breaks applied and they will stall. Unless it is getting a external fuel source like engine oil and making more hp than 50. I have had to plug the air intake on a runaway john deere and a Mack and it was spooky at best. Diesels don't sound very good at high rpms. CJ

The injector pump is now at the shop being repaired. According to the folks doing the rebuilding it was made in China and is a look-alike for pumps that are Japanese made.

my 2011/2012 DK45 has a Bosch german made fuel injector.....at least as i remember it. Back in 2012, i was having some starting issues and my dealer brought over a new injector pump thinking that that might be the problem. It turned out to be a minor solenoid issue that he fixed very easily. I seem to remember the injector pump package saying Bosch.

But my memory may be messing with me.

He did tell me that the older 2006-2009 (i believe) series had some injector pump failures. he didnt think the new series had that issue.

Where is the repair shop, and it's name?

Coobie- no problem, we all miss stuff once in a while; now don't let it happen again.

There is a way to stop run away diesel. Break the filter glass or remove it.

just turn off the selector valve above site glass...

Tractor is a 2006. Pump has been repaired and the tractor should be home by the end of the week.

Makes me think a manual valve in the line supplying the injector pump should be standard issue,

Yes turning the fuel off is a better solution but not all filters have that. You can also put hand on the air intake. My father was a diesel injection pump specialist. He told me to break the glass in emergency.

In cases like that, with no shut off at the fuel bowl one could also possibly kink or cut/crimp the fuel line to the fuel bowl or filter or whatever is easiest/safest to get at.
Curious what company your dad worked for and where, if you don't mind me asking. Was it a Bosch franchise by chance?

The 45 is back home in the barn, purring like a kitten, but for how long I don't know. My mechanic put an automatic shutoff on that can be pulled out and kills the engine. I will post a few pics to show the setup.

If you have to manually pull it, is it actually automatic? :p

I for one, would be very interested in seeing your setup. Been thinking about rigging something up on my CK... A manual fuel shut off would be much preferred by me, rather than that solenoid slamming things off. An emergency shut down valve similar to those on the earlier mentioned Detroit Diesels, is what I've been contemplating for the CK. I've operated and owned diesels since 1966, millions, and millions of miles, countless hours, never had one run away, but I still want a way to manually shut the CK down (if need be), from the operator's station....HB Bob
