runaway trailer

/ runaway trailer #2
I saw one Sat. in Keene,looked like the trailer didn't make the turn at the lights at 101 and Rte. 9. The roller was still chained to the trailer but on the other side of the road from the truck, just lucky it didn't wipe anyone out on it's way.

I didn't even see the tow vehicle but when I got past it I looked back and there was a kubota still chained to the trailer.

is it me or it there s LOT of space behind the rear axle??? normally the front axle is at least halfway back, there it looks like the back axle is a little less than halfway back...

Aaron I think it's probably a tilt trailer.

No pun intended lol

Still... almost looks like it needs 2 more axles back there though... that's alotta space behind the rear axle...

Agreed,It does look a little odd,I wasn't sure if it was because we were seeing it in a position were not supposed to see a trailer in or not

I used to have a triple axle tilt trailer similar to that one. One time I sent a driver to pick up a large self propelled sheepsfoot roller. The dealer loaded the machine and put it too far back. There must of been up pressure on the pintle hook because the trailer separated from the truck on Rt. 94 about 20 miles north of Chicago. It went into the bank on the side of the road away from the road before starting to head towards the road again. Luckily the front of the trailer got buried in the embankment before getting on the road again. The machine flew off the trailer. A lot of damage to the machine, over 10k I believe and minimal damage to the trailer. Very scary. When I looked at the accident site, I realized how lucky we were that the trailer didn't make it back on the road. The driver never forgot to check the hitch again, and I never forgot to remind anyone about it.

Theorem;
People casually borrow trucks and hook 10 or 12K trailers to them.
MANY 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks only have a ball on the back to take a small boat to the lake or a utility trailer to the dump.
2 & 5/16 coupler fits(all TOO easily) over a 2 inch ball and with some tongue load probably looks as if it won't come off.

Evidence;
These incidents and other reports on other forums where horse trailers have mysteriously become detached from their tow vehicles.

Solution;
Left to the reader...

a) low (or negative:eek: ) tongue weight is asking for trouble.

b) using a 2" ball for a larger coupler is also asking for trouble

there's no excuse for some of the things we see from time to time on the road....but we still see them. :( :(

I can not see a coupler on the trailer tounge, looks as if it just broke off at point of the 'v'.
