We were rafting down in the Carolinas a few weeks ago and a very popular T-shirt had this on the back:

Paddle Faster... I hear banjo music!

I don't know how many times we saw adults trying to explain it to young folks, but it was quite humorous to see the generation gap hard at work for those of us that remember that movie and those who's parents would probably not let them watch it until they were 30!

We made a quick trip to the mountains this weekend. I have not been up there in at least 15 years. We saw the "Paddle Faster... I hear banjo music!" on T Shirts and bumper stickers quite frequently.

You do have to be of a certain age to have seen the movie to understand the saying. Though I really don't like the book/movie since it was so condescending to the people who live in the mountains. I lived in Atlanta at the time the movie was made and traveled and camped quite a bit in the NE GA mountains back then. The book/movie is insulting to the people who lived in the area.

Back then the mountains were just starting to open up. The area was still isolated with few paved roads. It is amazing how much the area is now a big tourist destination. Very pretty country but I will be danged if I can see how people ecked out a living in those mountains. The Firefox books lets you know how they lived but how they grew enough food to keep from starving much less make a living is a mystery to me.

Back to road names.

After Floyd flooded a good bit of eastern NC I went down east a few times to help with the recovery. The first trip was when the water was still high and just started to go down in some areas. We were in a little town that had gotten hit pretty bad. We stopped right at the water edge looking out at the flooded out houses and talking to the people who used to live in those houses. The flooding was bad enough but what made it worse is the people were all related. One kid I talked to pointed out the houses of both set of grandparents as well as other family members. All where under water. A man I had talked to earlier had pointed out the houses of his siblings, parents, aunt/uncles, and grand parents.

They had no family to go stay with to recover.

Standing at the water edge. On a town street. Looking back to the creek that causes the flooding. The next street over which was underwater was named "Water Street."

Got a photo of it some where...

I won't ever forget the place or the smell.

Nearby county has names like "Northeast 40th Avenue Road" and yes, there is also a Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest 40th Avenue Road, real pita.

We "had" a Monkey Bottom Road - since renamed to Pine Ridge Road. I think the change occured when some developers created some nice subdivisions off of it.

I have lived on "James Road" all my life, just found out 2 months ago that this "James" character was the great great grandfather of my...grandfather....So I'm not sure how many "greats" that would be for me, but I thought it was cool.

Here in Gainesville, FL, we have Archer Road; It goes to Archer, FL. We have Williston Road; It goes to Williston. We have Newberry Road; Guess what, it goes to Newberry. We have Waldo Road; Goes to Waldo. Very practical, but not very creative.

We also have a Tower Road. Yep, there's a tower on it.
