Rural Road Names.

I heard a story that a road we live near used to be called "Big Meadow Castle Rock Farm Road", but people kept stealing the sign because it was so long, so it was shortened to just "Castle Rock Farm Road". We also have "Abeyance Road", "All Our Children Lane", and "Yellow Brick Road".

We have a Possum Trot, Chicken Run Road. nearby in Alabama we have Coon Dog Cemetery road. It goes the the actual Coon Dog Cemetery. Asphalt Rock Road. It used to have an old black roack that was used in some of the early Asphalt roads around. Rock Crusher Road below the house runs into Alabama. It had 2 stone quarries on it but only Hoover remains. Im amazed at folks that wonder why Rock Crusher Road has a steady stream of trucks on it lol.

We have Double D Road not far away. I got in trouble one day as we are driving down the road and I commented to my wife, "they named that road after your b**bs".

There's a county road near here named Flickerville Road. Nothing there but a farm house or two. Turns out there used to be a town there called Flickerville. There's also a road named Boy Scout Camp Road.
There's a road in southern IL called Lick Creek Road...which leads to the town of Lick Creek.
Near the town where my Dad grew up in Ohio there is a road named Polecat Road, and another named Stink Creek Road.

Nearby county has names like "Northeast 40th Avenue Road" and yes, there is also a Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest 40th Avenue Road, real pita.

We used to live at 18872 Northwest County Road 3360 in Navarro County, TX. And yes, there's Northeast, Southeast, and Southwest roads with the same numbers, so the direction is important. They're not nearly as original as most of these named roads. Of course to keep from having such a long line on envelopes, our address was usually written "18872 NW CR 3360".

A couple towns north, there is a road called "Ta Da Dump Rd".

I don't know if this is unusual,but every where I've lived the NW,NE,SW etc. was in middle of address like you stated. Over here in this area of SW,Fla, the SW,NE etc is on the end.For instance 1111 11ST. SW.

Yep, Boone, it's that way in at least part of Oklahoma. My grandparents (and later my parents) in Ardmore, OK, had an address of "316 H St., NE".

But many years ago, we lived in Marlow, OK, where the north/south streets were numbered and the east/west streets were named for Indian tribes.

You just reminded me,about 9 years ago,rural roads down from me were called the A road B road etc.Nowadays there called Wild Turkey road,Rabbit Run etc.

Where I grew up, we had Roast Meat Hill Road, Break Neck Hill Road, and High Taxes Road. When I move to SC, I'll be off of Mush Creek Road.

We have a road up the street named "blackswift"...Recently someone wrote "Taylor" over the "black"...:confused2:
